Wade: And now we start to see how Google will attempt to combat fragmentation... I believe Google now is part of the new launcher and that the new launcher will be able to be used eventually on older OS's, all of a sudden gingerbread can have Google now..So while most old handsets will not get 4.4 they will be able to get some of the more exciting aspects

Google now is the left most screen of the launcher. Installed launcher, search and the 4.4 google play services on 4.3 and it all runs perfectly. Launcher now follows the Play Store naming conventions so we'll likely see it on there in the near future.

The new launcher/google now is probably built on the 4.1 or 4.4 API's therefore not working with 2.3

The way to combat fragmentation is by getting kitkat onto old gingerbread phones although thats unlikely to happen

Hangouts and the the messaging app are now one and I heard you can install google wallet without any hassle's but you need an American SIM to make the most of it.

Hmmm wonder IF this will be happening on the Nexus 7 (2012) not that I've struck any major probs with 4.3 except slow app updates from devs

sbiddle: Is the S3 can't get even get 4.2 or 4.3 yet I'd say the chances of Samsung putting any development resources into a 3 year old phone that never made it beyond Gingerbread are about as close to non existent as you can get.

Samsung abandoned 4.2 and went straight to 4.3 for the S3. The first ROM for this (Vodafone Germany) leaked a day or so ago.

4.4 will be available via CyanogenMod for pretty much the entire Nexus range within a short time of 4.4 source being released.

There will almost certainly be 3rd party AOSP builds as well.

Have been running the 4.4 apps that work on 4.3 - Camera & gallery are a bit crashy, Hangouts with SMS is pretty good, keyboard is better without being anywhere near Swiftkey or Swype. The 4.4 launcher is quite a few steps backwards, unfortunately, really quite bad. Homescreen management is so far removed from previously-standard Android UX, and the widgets are hidden in a menu again. The swipe to the right for Google Now is simultaneously neat and completely destroys the muscle memory approach of having apps on both sides of the central homescreen (Notably, the only other Android OEMs to do this sort of thing were Samsung pre-Gingerbread, and more significantly, Motorola, with their Ice Cream Sandwich devices). Roboto Condensed is a very nice font to use, though.

Running the 4.4 apps on my HTC one GPe running 4.3, the Google Play services was killing my battery life (it was using 60% of my battery) so uninstalled, I guess I'll have to wait another week for the official 4.4 rom to arrive on my phone :D

Google Play seems to be a nasty culprit for massive battery drain if there's even the slightest issue with any of the components, especially whenever Google change location config.

I side loaded the Nexus 7 last night it took me 2 hours to figure out how to get the driver working on my Windows 8 or Windows 7 laptops the usuall driver install from the ADK does not work found an app to force it to install in the end and got it working.

I am just impatient I side loaded 4.3 onto my GS3 and suffer the concerquences of doing so.
