Might not be relevant anymore, but there are a couple of Google apps that suck the life out of Android phones after updates. First one is the updated Hangouts. They're supposed to have fixed it, but getting rid of Hangouts protects your privacy a bit more and makes sure it doesn't happen again. The other one is Google Now.

Just get rid, turn them off. They're also feeding location data to Google because using them at all accepts that as part of the T&Cs. You might not be bothered about that, but I was certainly slightly miffed to look at Latitude not long after I got my current phone (before I rooted it) and found out that Latitude and Now had been tracking my every movement.

My phone had been playing up ever since it tried to update hangouts a few weeks ago. It never completely upgraded because I disabled it thinking maybe that's what was wrong.

Just looked at the battery usage and it looks like it might be back to normal with screen time using most of the battery now. No weird apps or unknown names in the list. Hope it lasts!

Thanks for all the replies.

Hey, can you post screenshots, what you probably don't realise is Wakelock detector needs to have the "hide system processes" unticked, try that and post a screenshot?

It may be worth noting that bloody google have screwed up with their latest release of Google Play - I have around 30 min of wakelock for this

Anyway, make sure to display system process wakelocks for a much better picture anyway.

I don't have wake lock on my phone now after reset but from what that told me Facebook was the main thing waking my phone up.

KiwiNZ: The battery life was not one of the S3's strong points

I've heard people say that but , for me, battery life has been excellent. I use my SGS3 a lot. It's my only phone (no landline) and I get through 1.5GB data a month with it, so it's not exactly sitting idle all day. I get two days between charges. Currently, after 23 hours 43m 57s on battery I have 62% left. It was the battery life more than anything else that kept me with the SGS3 instead of upgrading.

Samsung is like that. Once in a blue moon one of the hundred apk goes into a crash loop and sucks the battery.

I only ever paid for two things on play store.

Titanium backup.

I disable every junk I don't want to lower the risk of that. But beware disable something important and it won't start.

Good luck

In terms of the battery not being the greatest I think it's just case by case. 4 of my friends also have s3 and we all have different battery lives. One gets almost 3 days from a single charge.

Anyway my battery today seems back to normal. Currently sitting at 43% after 6 hours and have used it a bit today so looks like a fresh start is what was needed
