Behodar: Is this a spontaneous failure, or have you changed something (eg. new SIM)? Which provider are you with?

I haven't changed anything in the two years I have owned the phone. It is very spontaneous and I am with Spark.

Have you gone too long without topping the phone up?

I'm on a monthly plan.  It seems my only choice is to take it to the store where I bought it two years ago and see what they say.

If you choose manual network selection, does it even see spark as an available network?

not its not
the simple fault finding that myself and others have pointed out would be my first step, taking it to the store would be the last step as then you can tell them whats wrong so you are left mucking around

What networks do you see?

It's pretty hard to diagnose based on the very limited information, but it's possible you're phone is camping on 2degrees or Vodafone if you're outside the Spark coverage area which is a very normal occurrence.

It's telling me that the network is unknown.  The whole fault started when I was up at the hospital visiting a friend last night and when we were coming home, it never reverted back to a service range as it normally does.

I'm sorry to come across as snippy but I have tried all helpful suggestions given to me on here and nothing seems to have worked.  I am at my wits end and want it fixed as soon as possible, as I don't have the funds for a new phone.

MrsDarthKermit: Nothing at all.

I know you're worried and frustrated, but if you want help, which is presumably why you came here, you're going to need to be a lot more descriptive. At this point, it looks like you just came here to complain.

What did you try exactly, and what exactly was the result. Your answers may well tell us where/what the problem is.

exactally this

when you put your sim card into the other phone did it work normally? if it did then the sim card is fine
when you put the other sim card into you phone did it work normally? if so then your phone is fine

you can take it to a spark shop, but they are not technicians there they are sales people, they will probably just want to send it away to be looked at so you have nothing to loose but a little of your time to actually try and fault find it yourself so you know if/when you go back to the shop you can say "my phone/sim is faulty" what can i do to fix it.

if you are not willing to provide more info there is not much more we can do

but feel free to take it to the shop

OK let me try this again.

On Saturday night we had to go visit a friend in hospital here. Before we went I noticed the Emergency Calls Only message on my handset but thought nothing of it as it normally clears itself. After we got out of the building I rebooted my phone as I wanted to make a call, and that normally remedies the problem. No luck this time. Since then I have removed the SIM cleaned the contacts and tried rebooting several times. No one was willing to try the SIM swap so that wasn't tested.

My 'About Phone' tells me there is no known network and I can't do any updates as it keeps telling me to try again later. It is also telling me my Mobile Network State is disconnected, and yes I have paid my last bill LOL.

Believe me, I have been trying to do what you have all suggested but nothing has worked. I have had the phone over two years, so not a new handset.

And one last comnent....I don't complain unless I get really frustrated and disheartened.

I appreciate you all trying to help me, but after trying everything you have suggested I feel that trying the store may be my last resort. My only guess is that all the hospital equipment has interfered with my phone.

The back-story here won't help. We need to know exactly what steps you've tried so far, and exactly what the outcomes were. "I've tried everything you've suggested" doesn't help because (a) you may have accidentally missed something, and (b) the outcomes of some of those tests can hell track down what the real issue is.

One thing I don't think I've seen mentioned yet is a check of what networks your phone can see. Go into Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Operators. The names may be a bit different" your phone, but if you find the right place it should say that it's looking for networks. When the last comes back, what entries does if show?

With regards to trying another SIM card, you can get 2degrees prepay cards from many dairies, service stations and supermarkets for a few dollars. If you put one of those in your phone and it connects to the network, it either points to either connectivity issues with Spark or some problem with your SIM card.

If you do take the phone back to the store, make sure they try your SIM card in a working phone, and a working SIM card in your phone. If either one stops working, you know which bit needs to be fixed/replaced.
