OS2! POP3! Suggest you get a gmail account and use IMAP or the web interface, many many benefits. Web host email isn't usually great, spam and reputation issues mostly, but is better than ISP supplied email.

Sorry to hear about the health problems, but good that you're on the mend :)

I'm missing how you create the spreadhseets in the first place - is it on a Win7 desktop?  If the phone or tablet is just a medium to transport the data from your home PC to the hospital, perhaps ask if they will take a USB drive?

I HATE spam - but spam assassin lets me keep it under control - did have one problem with an ad campaign set up by Gopher (never again). At the end I found I had at least one response - turns out they'd set it up so it was classified as definite spam and therefore deleted - I got suspicious and turned off deletion for a time and found one in the temporary folder. If it wasn't for spamassassin I'd have to use alternatives. Have just set up a couple of GMail accounts - not actively using them yet but needed for other things (e.g. Google Forms). Still to get time to play and figure out how their spam filtering works.

SA is ok, gmail spam filters are better. The main problem I found is email I sent didn't always arrive, as the web server was on a blacklist or just had a poor reputation. I use fastmail (paid) but gmail free/paid is good.

Sorry Andrew - just saw your earlier reply. Taking the file on a USB stick would be a good idea IF the doctor could just plug it in and go - but there are numerous issues there. For a start I suspect they don't support USB sticks on hospital PC's for security - and it would all take the scaresest of resources - doctor's time.

One element that may be worth investigating given your investment in offline data is the use of USB flash drives with a USB OTG (On The Go) adaptor. Essentially it's a cable that converts from male Micro USB to full-size female USB, allowing you to plug flash drives (As well as mice, keyboards, external drives, digital to analogue convertors, et cetera) directly into phones and tablets. The cables are cheap and very handy.

OTG is cool but any external data storage raises the possibility of corruption from caching failures etc. USB flash is particularly prone to it.

(well strictly speaking it is usually operator error but usb flash creates plenty of vector for that)

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

I'm not sure how it would help - I can transfer the file to the tablet (or phone - but that's a bit small to be useful) - the issue is still being able to read it. But I've asked my wife to try out some options - just have to see what will be simplest.

For sure, I certainly wouldn't suggest it as storage for a master copy, but as an internet-free way of transferring data between different pesky devices and platforms it is quite handy. WiFi Direct is also a good solution, although compatibility between devices can be hit or miss there.

Google Sheets that I described earlier is almost certainly the easiest. You can work online in their web app, in any spreadsheet you like, upload to Google Drive. Then just use Drive on your phone, mark it for offline viewing, and it'll be visible on your phone, updated any time you updated it in Drive.
