The phone has huge resolution, but I think only so much of the display is used because of how close it is to your eyes. I think it could make more sense to have two concave displays. Will be interesting to see how it develops over time.

I'm interested in getting a bluetooth gamepad to use with it. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

It's definitely the content.

Many images / scenes / "realities" are very sharp. Example: in Vimeo video you can select the Moon theatre. Try standing up and turning around and looking at the scene around the screen and behind you...inclulding the lounge chair you're "sitting" on. All very clear and detailed and sharp.

User experience: In a nut shell.... fantastic!!
This is the way of the future and finally reachable. $199 + handset is a very reasonable price point to dip ones finger into VR. It doesn't have the kick of the rift (so I'm told) but hey... it's still great stuff.

Every one who has tried it (with the exception of my misses! lol) has been very impressed. Jaws drop on the ground and I have the video footage to prove it. While the software database isn't mind blowing, there still is enough on there to keep you impressed for some time. Also quite a bit of free stuff. Netflix never looked so good.

If you have the phone. Get the Gear VR. 8 out of 10 from this VR novice :-)

You can also view 3D videos on YouTube by using the Samsung Gear VR web browser (You have to install it from - UPDATE - From the Store - I think - rushing through things).....and start a video....and then go to fullscreen....at lower left is a "2D 3D 360" set of options. Click on 3D and the video plays in 3D!

I watched some Netflix using the Gear VR this morning for a few minutes. It was pretty good. I was mildly disturbed that I couldn't put my feet on the coffee table in front of the huge screen. :-) When I took them off.....reality was a bit of a shock. Heh.

My initial reaction was to grab the remote on the table. Couldn't find my hands to do it. lol

I did a bit of snopping on the net and apparantly there maybe a Hulu app for it next year. Fingers crossed on that one.

Picked up one from pb techs chch store this morning , their online shop was showing 4 units in stock at the time.

First time experiencing vr for missus and myself , hard to fight the urge to walk around while in the 'other reality'
Facial expressions are hilarious!

Looking forward to future developments on this front

I signed up years ago. Certain NZ cards do work. Also you could buy Hulu vouchers;

I have never needed to buy these but I do use the site for US itunes vouchers.

It's worth the effort. Personally I find my online viewing to be mainly Lightbox, Showtime (Only for season 5 of Homeland), Hulu and a little bit of Netflix.

I like to play, so I have Netflix, Lightbox, (SONY) Crackle, Neon, Amazon Prime, ITVPlayer, BBC iPlayer and Quickflix.

But I keep hearing Bruce Springsteen's song in my head: "57 (streaming web sites) and nothin' on." ;-)

So, are there any recommendations for a gamepad that is compatible with Android headsets?

Alas, the PS3 has yet to curl its toes up so no. The controllers seem to be around the $100 mark so it’s not a price effective option.

Samsung El-GP20 gamepad
MOGA Pro Power
SteelSeries (for Android)

I googled around a bit and the only gamepad I could find orderable in NZ was the Steelseries model for Android - from MigthyApe - but they say it won't arrive until January 13th. Actually.....it was conflicting. Their web site said it was in stock, but at point of actual payment they said they were waiting on a shipment.....so either they are 'overly optimistic' on the sales page or they were pessimistic on the payment page. The Samsung gamepad is one that was released for the SGS4. It looked to me like they were bringing out a new gamepad sometime this year - earlier rather than later.
