Not really. It makes a big difference in obtaining any legal remedy in NZ if that is ever needed.

I buy a lot of small stuff from China but am generally wary of major purchases. I did buy a $600 notebook from Amazon, but only because it was the only one that ticked all my boxes and it was not available any other way. A couple months after I got it, the mousepad started acting up. At the moment it's not too bad. It comes and goes, staying just this side of intolerable. I would have preferred to buy the computer here, but I couldn't find one. Availability is also often an issue with New Zealand.

I buy parallel imported or direct import when I cannot buy locally.

Very often by the time you pay postage and, if applicable, GST, the savings are not significant enough to bother otherwise.

I don't see parallel or direct importing as a way to save money.

joker97: People always have two choices.

Buy something with support and warranty.
Buy something with no/poor/hassle/difficult support.

Whether imported or not is usually not the main factor.
Caveat emptor.

Agreed. I only buy the parallel / direct import if it is a device 'I MUST HAVE'...and no one sells it locally. Otherwise, I'm PB Tech or similar....so I have a place I can to with a defective thing.

Many of the smaller parallel import retailers seem to have horror stories attached which sometimes indicate high expectations but also indicate the level of service provided.

On the other hand I will buy parallel imported through a full service retailer like The Warehouse or PBTech.

I'm looking at a Nexus 5X atm. Buying direct through Google is a possibility.

Google is an exception because Google do provide an official support policy for NZ. From what I gather it is direct device exchange for 1yr , warranty. The flipside is PBTech offer the 32gb version with 2yr warranty and it is probably LG local for this model.

So, a good end to it all, finally got a replacement device. Supero has supplied me with a brand new LG G4 to replace the faulty one. Their communication was a bit slow\lacking but the service in the end actually wound up being perfectly good. 3 weeks to get a replacement from the time they received the faulty device is about what I would expect.

However, in the meantime, I bought a Galaxy S7, so if someone wants a brand new still in a sealed box LG G4 (32GB, Black leather back) for $400, PM me!
