Have you looked at the new Amazon HD 8"?

Screen resolution is a little low and some of the reviews aren't entirely positive.

My wife has the LG GPad 8.3 which appears to be a better option.

I wouldn't recommend the Huawei Mediapad at all. I have the M2 model, good specs and speedy, but it's still stuck on Lollipop - and it was only released last year! There was just *one* bugfix update. There's no communications about Marshmallow from Huawei, very poor support and the worst part - zero custom ROMs - even though the bootloader is unlockable and TWRP is available for it. Also, Huawei's skin is very intrusive and all over the place - especially the notifications shade, which they've completely butchered. Not sure if that's improved with newer Huawei devices though. But yeah, I'm not gonna buy Huawei any more, unless they ship stock Android.

As far the other Android tablets go, there's not a single one I can recommend unfortunately (if you're after high-end specs). No point paying good money for a device with a measly 2-3GB of RAM, when you can get smartphones with 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 820 for the same price or cheaper!

The Pixel C is nice, but 10" is a bit unwieldy, plus, it lacks GPS and LTE, which, IMHO, is a ripoff considering you're paying a premium price.

The Android tablet market is in a pretty sorry state, so much so, that I've been recommending people to buy an iPad instead. At least you know your device will be well supported for a long, long time and will have a decent resale value..

The Media Pad 3 spec wise meets the requirements on paper, but one reviewer I just watched basically lamented performance for gaming which is one area this tablet will see reasonable use.

Also battery life but I am not that worried about that. 3 hours should be enough, we carry portable chargers.

He attributed poor battery life and performance to the 1600p screen which he said was the best he had seen, but though the SOC wasn't powerful enough to drive it.

I am still Lg Gpad 8.3. It's going good so far. I use it to watch movies as well as monitor my inhouse camera system as the pixels to screen ratio is quite good. It's quite snappy considering its been 3 years since it released.

Really? We have one of these but its speed is soooooooo slooooooooooooooow it hardly gets used. What's the trick to keeping it ticking over properly? I've recently re-set the device and it's not being asked to do much, but it's just so frustrating to use compared to our iPad Air first gen, which I think is older but still going fine.

Interesting thread.

The market wisdom is: Statistically, no-one wants Android tablets unless they're ~$99 for the kids to play with. Tablet market is now iPad, Surface, or name-brand Surface knockoff, with the Android tabs at the bottom of the barrel.

Given even Google don't seem to know what's up in Android tabletland between the Pixel C, hybrid touchscreen Chromebooks running Android apps, and freeform windows in Nougat, I suspect we'll have to wait and see where they take it before any more truly premium products launch.

The Z4 seems to be the best widely available New Zealand option, the Huawei is probably better spec overall, it remains to be seen if they can optimize to get it to reach it's true potential.

The Z4 is eye-wateringly expensive however.

I got a Tesco Hudl 2 while in the UK. Good 9 inch screen, graphics and processor. 2g of processor ram. HDMI out and microSD for extra memory. £70 on eBay. Only problem is battery level needs to be managed and is no longer available new.
