No but NZ Post do provide apps as do their sister Kiwibank. TVNZ is also a state owned enterprise and it provides apps fro free. Weather Watch is a private forecaster and it provides a free app.Its called a service. The fact that met Service are now going to provide a free app proves my point. It should have been free ages ago. As they quote on their website

"Under contracts with the Crown, MetService is the authorised provider of warnings and other public safety weather services to the people of New Zealand, as well as certified weather information to the aviation industry and all airlines flying into and within New Zealand."

The Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited is a state owned enterprise, not a government agency. As such it's a company on its own right. You don't see people wanting NZ Post to transport parcels for free. Or Kiwirail to transport stuff for free.

It doesn't prove anything. NZ Post provides an app because the information is not the service - transporting the mail and parcels is the service. Metservice sells the information - a free app is giving it away for free. Sure, it's good for the public but they still have to make money - they make it by selling the information to companies. If they didn't make money how would they pay for the technology needed for weather forecast?

My point is that even if the app still cost $ 2.59 it would be an ok price to pay for the information. It's a single payment so I'd still consider worth it.

I'd pay for it... If they actually got the forecast right

BoM here in Oz have a new free app, but Pocket Weather (thanks @ajobbins, who put me on to it years ago) is waay nicer and using BoM data. It's amazing the difference a good UI makes. A shame it doesn't cover NZ.

Hi everyone, thanks for weighing in on our apps. Here's the low-down: a new FREE, ad-supported app will be available for Android and iPhone early next week! It looks fab and we hope you will love it as much as we do.

We closed the current app for new downloads a few weeks back and referred people to the mobile website instead, as obviously we don't want people to pay for something that will be decommissioned in a very short time. In addition, those who have paid for the app since 1 Jan this year will have the option to get a refund or have the purchase price donated to Surf Lifesaving NZ. We hope everyone will take the latter option as a way to support SLSNZ, since they can get the new app free.

We'll be posting a FAQ blog on our website next week when we go live, and the FAQ are already up in our Ask MetService community: Ask MetService app FAQ

We've already had a lot of feedback on both sides of the 'free app with ads' vs 'paid app with no ads' debate; we've gone for free with ads because that's going to get the app into more hands - including overseas visitors - and so help more people keep up to date with forecasts and warnings. While we are an SOE and charged with operating as a fully-commercial company, weather safety is our core business. Running ads pays for our ability to provide a much higher level of digital service to everyone.

We look forward to hearing what you think about the new app - stay tuned to the app stores next week!

ronw: It really is unbelievable that they have not had a free app ages ago. How any firm in the business of providing information do not have a free app. Will wait and see if one eventuates.

It's unbelievable, the expectation now, that in the information age, information should be provided free.

Thanks for the update. The app does look good. I'd like the option of paying in-app to not have ads - I rather support this way.

Free with Ads, but with an option to pay for a second app optin without Ads, or somehow pay for a one off in app upgrade to no Ads sounds ideal.

lol Its got widgets now. very handy, a left swipe from locked or unlocked, mainly to avoid blocking my screen...

I paid for the previous version because I don't want ads _at all_.

The new version looks impressive but I hope the next version has a paid version too.

I will wait and see what it turns out like. I hope it is an up to date app eg using material design and works with Android Wear. These days I hardly ever take my phone out of my bag just use the watch for everything. Meanwhile does anyone use Weather Underground which would be my preference as it can use many of the private weather stations around my residence. Nothing like having a variety of weather stations on which to base the forecasts.

For some reason it stopped working on the watch last month. Hopefully they will fix soon.

Good news - we've updated the Android widget with severe weather warnings and a new design. Unfortunately some versions of Android won't automatically remove the old widget, so you will need to remove it manually in those cases.

Re option to remove ads - that's not planned at this stage, but never say never! Note that we do have a pretty strict policy on ads - their content, placement and whether they detract from the app's core purpose - so do give it a shot before casting your final judgement :)

I use the YR.no android app.

In my experience the Norwegians do a great job of forecasting NZ weather.

I have half a dozen locations saved and I set the home-screen widget to wherever I am.
