Any Android app for this sort all thing will want permissions to access damn near everything on the phone.

If thats Ok with you ...... I'd rather not add more apps that can access damn near anything they want and access/use any of your ph's services (calls txts)

Id rather the evil MS empire(Skype) than some smaller company less afraid to do whatever with access to your data

Calling rates to the UK are US1c per minute for landlines and most mobiles, which is hard to beat, and as it’s a Google product I’m already logged in on my phone, and it works on iPad.

Also top up is easy as google play store already have my credit card.

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

If Google is what you want that's cool. But don't assume the if you have a uk local number people will pay premium rates to call it. I have a Australian local number and people just pay the normal rate to call it. IE it is treated as a local calling number in Melbourne and a standard landline number from anywhere else in Australia.

Makes it super cheap for my wife's family to call us.

Generally if you have VoIP and pay for the service, then local numbers are just priced as landline for the purpose of inbound calls (i.e. in NZ and AU they're free to call, in other countries they are charged the same as landline receiving calls). But if the service is "free" then they make money on inbound calls by making these number premium.

Agreed. I pay a monthly charge for the local number .And pay for outbound calls. I should have made that clear. But those fees are is a reasonable price in my opinion.
