NikT:

I'm not on here to sell phones, I'm on here as an enthusiast and to share knowledge where I can.

I've been using MIUI as a custom ROM on and off since 2010. I bought a Mi Max v1 and am a fan of what Xiaomi have done as a company. {snip}

Yup ok, calm your farm...

But as I linked to a thread (just 5 minutes ago) with the orange idiot actually pushing to get chinese comms companies out of NZ and elsewhere, I'd recommend not buying one ATM.. AT LEAST until there's some sort of resolution to this. Because I know how hard it is to come across money for a new phone. And don't want to see someone left with a brick because a server in china is cut off from the outside world.

If you can guarantee this WON'T happen, all the better. But I can't, in fact it's looking more likely every day.

I also was an enthusiast, as you know, and I wasn't having a go at you.

Never realised you'd lost your sense of humour.

Edit: It's also the OP's wifes phone... I'm pretty sure everyone wants those to "just work", as we know how happy wives get when they don't.

Long couple weeks mate.

Not sure how a ban on the country of manufacture of telco infrastructure = blocking IPs/OTA servers = bricking phones though?

Give it time... This is all coming from the US and the orange tool. Nothing has to make sense for associated stuff to be shut down. Especially with a trade war as well.

Keep politics to the Politics sub-forum. You can create a topic to discuss it there but this thread is not the place.

I successfully transitioned my 69yo father who has used iphones since 2012 to a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 yesterday

They visited the Mi Store, came back armed with car charger, screen protector, extra cord, spigen case etc, overall had a fantastic experience and felt well catered to

I haven't played with MIUI for years but overall its a fairly good UI to segway from iOS to AOS for the old boy

As far as hardware goes the Redmi Note 5 is a very nice device which i would happily recommend, time will tell on long term usage but so far one happy old man :P

HAHAHA, that was a bit slow dude... 3 days since the post you replied to! tongue-out

And it was about NOT buying Huawei phones until this biz played out. So on topic.

And feel free to move this to the "Huawei is toast" thread since it looks like I might've had a "vision" laughing

Oh hey, no-one has said Nova 3i or Redmi Note 5 yet. Those are hands-down the midrangers to beat (unless you're married to vanilla Android). :)

My brother picked up a Redmi Note 5 a couple weeks ago and he's pretty stoked considering the price.

As with any droid not from a big brand with their own assurances (and issues) on updates/security I would check to see if you can flash your own rom. The majority of Xiaomi phones allow this relatively easily. Either that or make sure it comes with Android One and stick with that.
