Looks like this may be what I have to go with, until Google manages to provide Android to Android transfers.

Google is not the problem - ask any Nexus or Pixel users.

fe31nz:

.... Then you should be able to use X-plore's WiFi file sharing mode.

The difference between theory and practice is: in theory there is no difference.

Well, I couldn't get it to work - having enabled a WiFi server in XPlore, can't see how to access any remote folder - from either side.
Also tried with Total Commander - same.

Pair them with Bluetooth and share via Bluetooth. This works for me.

I too suggest Bluetooth if available … might be slow one pic at a time, but does the job while watching TV smile

Is there a Bluetooth App available that will do bulk transfers?

I have purchased a suitable adaptor to allow transfer from the USB stick back to the Lenovo tablet.
This method (while not ideal) has proved to be fast and reliable.
I found X-Plore to be easier for me to use than File Commander or Total Commander.

Thanks everyone :-)

You need to be of the correct age and suitable geekness to understand sneakernet. smile

Oh. OK. :-)
I can imagine how long the flimsy SD card trays in the devices would last if they were used to routinely transfer files - not to mention the risk of corrupting the data and/or card.

As I have said: I now have a solution that appears to work reasonably well.

It works for me with a normal WiFi connection and with a hotspot created by my phone.  First create a hotspot on your phone and get your tablet to connect to that hotspot.  Then in X-plore on both devices, scroll down its screen to see the "Show" button at the bottom of the list.  Tap that, then enable the display of "WiFi file sharing".  On the device you want to export files from, in the icons column, tap the "WiFi Server" button to enable the server on that device.  On the other device, scroll to see the "WiFi Sharing" line and open it to see the "WiFi Server" and "Add device" lines.  Tap "Add device", then "Scan".  X-plore should then do a scan and tell you it saw one new device, which should then appear in the list below "WiFi Sharing".  Tap on that new device and navigate to where the files you want are.

Thanks very much for that Fe31NZ.
Yes it does work - with no cables!
I appreciate the trouble you went to to compile those detailed instructions.

I found the best solution is from Google

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.nbu.files&hl=en

Uses WiFi direct but with no setup required.

Works great.

I have tried NFC by tapping two phones together but that's hit and miss.

As already suggested a USB stick with micro\normal usb and\or appropriate adaptors is the best way to do this.  Android natively has android beam but this but it's never been reliable for me.

Superbeam has worked well for me in the past.  You install the app on both devices and then it sets up a wifi direct connection between the two devices.  I didn't realise the Google File Clean up app did file transfers as well.
