I don't think any smartphone will ever have great sound - unless using good quality headphones. Not saying this one is bad but listening to anything on any phone without headphones is just a futile exercise - unless you are sitting by yourself in a closed room at home.

Dolby have had a smartphone speaker product for quite some time now, it's also present in Motorola and Huawei among others. Essentially an EQ to compensate for hardware limitations with some smarts to detect the kind of media that's playing. There's an XDA piece on Dirac audio that goes into some of the details of what these audio vendors do in phoneland.

There's something to good phone speakers in the context of speakerphone/conference calls and showing videos to friends (or listening to music/podcasts while in the shower...), several colleagues consider speakers to be a key selling point when choosing their phones. The Galaxy S10 and iPhone XS/Max have very good speakers indeed - the other day I was working from home and used an S10+ as a speaker for a chunk of the day quite happily - and I would rate the Reno 10x right up there alongside them for volume.

It does not seem to support the AAC codec for Bluetooth audio, which is a little disappointing as it results in increased latency for the likes of the Galaxy Buds / Bose / Beats kit which don't support AptX or LDAC.

I have the Reno 10x myself and can confirm that AAC is supported but it seems to be select devices only. I have two AAC devices - a pair of Xiaomi Airdots Pro true wireless earbuds and a Sony XRS-XB10 bluetooth speaker. The Airdots can't seem to work with AAC, while the Sony does.

I've found this to be a running thing with some phones I've owned in the past - my previous Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 were unable to utilise the AAC codec and used SBC the whole time with some Galaxy Buds I've tested. In both cases though, the Sonys worked flawlessly through AAC (and there are options in the Bluetooth connections list to turn AAC on/off), so this makes me think each device has a device list which allows AAC to be used? A very strange situation though, I'm probably going to be selling the Airdots quite soon.

In general though, have had the phone for three days and I love it. Flat screen, very solid in the hand, great cameras, lovely display with solid battery life. The under screen fingerprint scanner is quite possibly the fastest one I've seen apart from the OnePlus 7 Pro. The only improvement I'd like to see with this with SuperVOOC instead, but otherwise it's definitely my favourite phone thus far.

Also, was just wondering if anyone here sees that the phone automatically activates a night viewing/night shift orange tint at and after sunset? Can't seem to be turned off as I like being able to watch videos and play games without a tint.

Yeah, there seems to be a lower level tint going on with Night Shield off, and if I turn that on, it becomes even more intense for my liking.

I'm quite sure there's an automatic screen tint since when I wake the screen for the fingerprint scanner the tint reverts back to normal as is per phones with that kinda scanning. I've logged a support request with Oppo to see if there's a way to do turn this off as I can't seem to find anything in the settings...

How about on your side of things, though? Is this also going on with you?

As a holdover from when updates were only manually deployed/for countries where OTAs are not feasible, full update packages can be downloaded from OPPO's site and manually installed. As an update had been reported in the UK and India, I was curious whether manual installation of this was blocked/the software was heavily region-gated like Huawei & friends. I was most pleased to discover that this is not the case, and a manual installation can be performed without wiping data or modifying the region of the device. Expect this to change for future models if other vendors are any indication.

The .10 software build can be downloaded here, at which point you'll need to change the extension to .ozip and open it with the stock file explorer.

June security patch aside, there are no noticeable changes and you won't miss out on anything by waiting for a local OTA after telco sign-off. All who are considering doing so should bear in mind that there is a balancing act between stability and the bleeding edge of updates, and waiting is the safest bet if this is your primary (or only) device. There is also no information yet as to whether doing this will block future OTA updates. I installed this as proof of concept.

Re: battery life, it has been exceptionally good with Always-On Display turned off. With AOD off, the device is more than capable of keeping up with my demanding workday, on par with the stellar results of the P30 Pro and stomping effectively all other flagship smartphones on the NZ market. With AOD on, I could watch the battery percentage tick down in standby. Have yet to test this on the .10 build but I expect no major changes just yet.

Anecdotally it also seems to charge faster with a SuperVOOC charger despite not having SuperVOOC.

Can't tell you exactly how fast as OPPO's chargers are difficult to measure with USB tools, the tools sitting in-between the device and the charger prevents the negotiation of VOOC/SuperVOOC charging speeds. I don't know if I'd rush out and buy a SuperVOOC charger, this is just anecdotal as I have one on hand. Don't think anyone's missing out on a lot to be fair.

My device did take a few days to settle down after initial setup, standby drain is now very low. When Huawei debuted their 40W SuperCharge on the Mate 20 Pro I began changing up my charging routines - no need to plug in overnight when a ~15min charge will go from ~15% to ~75% + wireless charging to top up during the day as needed. Of course the Reno 10x does not have wireless charging, but it is well-suited to the same pattern of use as P30 Pro/Mate 20 Pro and goes the distance even without sporadic wireless top-ups.

Makes sense, I most likely won't have to do that, but it's good to see regardless!

Yeah, I need to change that habit, too. I've come from Apple over so many years and it's been a given for me to charge them overnight. In general though, I like having a high battery level especially when going out. I never leave the house on less than 100% of battery 🤣 I'm not too bothered about the loss of wireless charging since I don't like not being able to use my phone while charging, anyway!

Much the same re: leaving the house. Wireless charging is a bit of an ecosystem piece, in that once you've bought into it, getting a device without it renders all your wireless chargers useless. For me, despite having had various devices that supported it over the years like the Lumia 1520 and Galaxy S6 edge+, wireless charging didn't really kick in as an almost-must-have feature until I got an iPhone 8 Plus - aha! No more need for bloody Lightning cables! Reno 10x, thankfully, uses USB-C, which was not necessarily a given in OPPO-land until fairly recently.

Wireless charging becomes about propping my device up on a stand on my desk so notifications are visible while working, having it charge while doing so is effectively a bonus. Were the device low on power to the point where I wouldn't want to pick it up to reply to something, I'd plug it in. Reno 10x has had such excellent endurance that I've not missed the feature.

Do recommend picking up a spare VOOC charger for the office, that's a handy thing to have, and they're reasonably priced at ~$29.

On another note, I was delighted to find that the retail demo units of Reno 10x have local photos preloaded to showcase the benefits of the cameras in NZ specifically. I have never known any other vendor to load such localised demo content, what a nice touch.
