I'm guessing you'd be able to get VoLTE working (like I've managed to with my Xiaomi Mi9SE) but I wouldn't hold me breath for VoWiFi.

I had high hopes for the Nord, but the cameras seem like junk.

Google AU Store does not sell direct to NZ you will need to have the forwarded from Aus or parallel imported.

JBHiFi in Aus has it but ours doesn't if anyone has a friend who works there maybe ask them to bring a small shipment in, I'm sure there's enough interest here to sell enough.

There is a 5G version coming out not that it really matters in the lifetime you will have the mobile, will only really matter for your next IMO.

Pixel 4 vs 4a performance test here on youtube. The 4 won easily, but my take is for everyday usage the 4a is going to be plenty fast enough even. It's really in gaming that the higher end phones pull ahead. Pixel 4 US$750, Pixel 4a $US350, so great value.

Pixel 5 may come out this year. Could be US$800+ when it's released.

Is it safe to say the 4a 5G will have the SD 765 in it (same as the nord?). Wonder what the price jump would be. If they can do 4a 5G for US$399 it would be awesome.

After running my current phone without a screen protector (and it surviving pretty well with just 1 small noticable scratch) the gorilla glass 3 is a semi concern. But I guess the display is flat, annnnd there's no in screen fingerprint sensor (main reason I'm not running a screen protector) to worry bout. Hmmm.

Looks like US$499. Unsure if real world performance for day to day stuff will be much better.

Pixel 4a is also going to be my upgrade when it gets to NZ, not too concerned about buying through a parallel importing retailer would be nice if PBtech got it in.

Would be nice to have a faster budget 5g chipset like the Dimensity 820 but I assume this was designed before this was released.

Have to say I've been holding off upgrading my (now ancient) OnePlus 2, specifically waiting for this phone. It seems like the Android mid-range has sucked for a while now and is just starting to come back. Particularly if you prefer a smaller device, and want to avoid Huawei hardware, which seems like the safe move at the moment.

I've submitted a query to PBTech asking if they're likely to make it available for us to buy in NZ - fingers crossed.

I have two Pixel 3a's and the 6GB RAM on the 4a really really makes me want to get one .. but then I would have 2 perfectly functional 3a's sitting in their boxes ..

Love the sub 6 inch screen size; I've played with some 6.x inch screen phones at work and found my small hands were getting sore very quickly from stretching.

Does 4GB to 6GB RAM really make any difference? If you switch between many applications regularly, sure, but most Android apps are fairly small, though there is a JVM overhead.

Judging by the quantities of Pixel 3 series that got stuck in AU + Home/Nest only officially launching here in June, I wouldn't hold my breath for a local release unfortunately.

In.my experience, yes. 6GB makes a big difference over 4GB for my usage, I would struggle with a 4GB Android device as a daily driver. Higher memory specs are potentially useful for the likes of Samsung DeX. There are diminishing returns after ~6GB given most devices will crush apps out of memory long before say 12GB is maximised. I've noticed no difference in my day to day use between 8GB and 12GB RAM devices. But 4GB to 6GB is a compelling jump.

FWIW I reached out to JB Hifi and got the exact same response from them.

I don't really expect Google to sell phones here in NZ in my lifetime.
