I've got an Oppo A5 2020 and it came with its own Messages app which I promptly replaced with the Google Messages app. Unfortunately I can't remove the Oppo app and it has a permanent "1" indicator on it to show that there's an unread message. Nothing I do can remove the "1" indicator, even after I removed all permissions for this app. My last phone had the ability to disable stock apps but this new phone has the disable option greyed out; seems like Oppo don't like you disabling their stock apps.

Intersting - are there any OS updates for it?  Yeah I remember the 'older' Oppo's wouldnt allow you to change the 'default' apps and the newly released phones all used 'stock' android apps (looking at A52, A72, X2).  I think the A5 was the last gen of Oppo's.

Xiaomi also ship their own SMS app with more recent models (e.g. Note 7). It's not great though, I was really happy when I found out I could get the stock SMS app from the Play Store instead! One feature I must have is the ability to archive SMS messages which the stock app has. I don't understand the point in their (e.g. Samsung, Xiaomi, etc) reinventions of the wheel. Is there any practional or functional features these stock apps do that the stock SMS app don't...?

For sure - was mainly looking at the carrier devices otherwise where do you draw the line!  I personally have a Mi9SE and have wifey on a Redmi Note 7 (with pixel exp ROM).

I believe this is using Google Jibe (https://jibe.google.com/) - Google have been slowly rolling it out worldwide over the past 6 months , seen reports of users on Skinny also seeing this enabled yesterday.

I'm on skinny and enabled the chat option in Google messages, but it still says "your operator does not support this device".

Anyone actually on skinny with this now functioning?

EDIT: found reports on reddit of skinny users who had it working (and others where it wasnt). Possibly being restricted by phone make/model...

I have it working on Skinny on my Mi A2

I think you need to receive the prompt to enable it to actually have it working.

The Oppo A5 2020 came out in October 2019, does that make it the last gen? There was also an A5 model that came out in July 2018, I assume the A5 2020 is a revised/refreshed A5. It's running the latest software available for it, Android 10 and ColorOS 7.1.

To be honest I've been a bit disappointed with this phone. The battery life is great, I regularly have 50% battery remaining after a full day of use (which usually includes lots of Pokemon Go playing) but I miss the pure Android experience that I had with my old Nexus 5x. I should get the Pixel 4a.

Xiaomi doesn't allow you to remove their SMS app. But the default is easily set to the stock SMS app.

RCS is dead. I'm surprised it's even resulted in another thread on here!

Yeah, it's odd that you can't see other people using the service via contacts. Or when you start a new conversation/thread/message with someone.

Got the notification today. My first RCS messages were to @sbiddle, despite him saying RCS is dead.

has this rollout in NZ extended out beyond Spark / Skinny yet?

So far the only contacts I have that have RCS enabled are using one of these carriers

if you are messaging someone who has it enabled the text input field will say "chat message" instead of "text message"

I’m with Kogan (so Voda network) and I have it enabled in Google Messages; personally, I like the feature, especially communicating with my wife (Skinny).

I'm on Vodafone and my Messages app asked me last night if I wanted to turn on the chat feature.

My Nokia connected via 2degrees using the stock Android One Messages app offered to connect to the chat service 2-3 weeks ago.  I haven't bothered to enable it yet.
