andrewNZ: The westpac pay app is a disgrace.
It has never been reliable for me. I think I've had it work ONCE in the dozen or so times I've tried to use it over 3ish years and two phones.
Every other time it either won't log in, or just doesn't work.

I didn't have issues for ages until I got a new phone, Payments <$200 have always been fine, but if I needed to enter my pin the teminal said it was inmcorrect.

Talked to Westpac about this - the first CSR just said we can't help with Westpac pay, sorry.  Never got the pin fixed...

My Credit Card is with ANZ and my banking with someone else.

The ANZ card not only works with google pay but

1) I can set up a direct debit from my main bank to pay it off in full each month if I want (which suits me)

2) If I spend $30K in a year I get $300 cashback for no effort (more than covers the $60 annual fees for me and  my wife to have a CC each)
If you are a bigger spender get the Platinum card - higher fees, but more cashback.

I'd recommend the OP think about moving their CC to ANZ.

I have it working on my phone, its nifty enough and its never not worked for me. However, as not every place I shop has contactless as an option, I still need to carry my card with me, so I tend to just use the card rather than faff with my phone.

It seems like a step backwards from Westpac, and I assume that they'll get onboard with Google Pay or similar in the near future. Its not inconvenient enough for me to go through the hassle of changing banks (yet).

I've trimmed the number of cards in my wallet down to 3 or 4 now, including Driver's Licence. Everything else either ditched, or in the Stocard app. But until pretty much every eftpos in the country does tap & go, I'll still need my money cards with me. And it'll be quite a while til we see an app replace the legal requirement to carry your licence with you while driving.

I had asked Westpac for clarification what they meant by some features below, and their reply indicates the app may still work, but I'll have to see if the 'IT' team come back to them

Those not having issues look to be the minority if the play store reviews are any indication.

My Master Card got renewed today and inside was some marketing for "Apple Pay' so looks like the stand alone Westpac app is now defunct and all payment is now via Apple Pay. Now to see if i can get it working on android, (Me not holding my breath) if only Google Pay would work. (Not Supported Bank)

Asb pulled this nfc support awhile back now, in favor of Google pay. but it had a long cutover period for those already using.

Moving over to Google pay was completely integrated within the app and a very painless process. Makes sense to use the built in Google application rather than maintaining essentially the same product.

Thanks, that sounds like a good option. Maybe some people taking their business elsewhere might put some pressure on Westpac

Taken from a email i sent Westpac Customer Service.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your email regarding Westpac Pay for Android.

We are sorry to hear of your disappointment at the upcoming changes to one of the contactless methods of payments.

It’s great to hear that your preference of contactless payment was with Westpac Pay for Android, however, we made the decision to stop the Android support of this service as we have found that the customer experience has been inconsistent.

We know our customers, like yourself, enjoyed the convenience this product offered and our team are currently exploring alternative digital payment solutions for our Android users. We look forward to being able to share these updates in the future and we do apologise for the inconvenience as a result of these changes.

In the meantime, there is always the ability to make contactless payments on all Mastercard debit/credit cards or by using Westpac PayTag.

sounds to me like they are doing things backwards.
Surely they should have sorted the alternative (google pay) before removing the current method.
If I were a westpac customer that would p#** me off enough to change banks.

I've just applied for an ANZ credit card and will keep the westpac one as a backup. Maybe westpac will catch up one day

Perhaps westpac could spend some of the $583m profit on developing software for end users?
