Has anyone had an issue roaming in OZ recently due to these new rules. I was there a couple of weeks ago, transiting on the 26th October, and had no issues roaming.

I also tried the Telstra device checker.

My main phone is reported as not blocked, but my backup phone is reported as not being a phone. Wife's phone is a bit older (Nokia G20) and it also is tagged as supported.

The turnoff was on the 28th of October. And the networks did not start blocking handsets until after that date, so the turn-off is still in progress.

I was there until the 28th with no problems (on Telstra with voLTE), but I have no idea if my handset will still be supported when I next return.

Looks like the low end Samsungs are not identical.

What's left to look at? Oppo and Nokia?

Generally it looks like all the models sold in NZ advertise dual sim. AU models do not.

stuartmac: The implementation in Australia is a huge regression back to single-carrier handsets. Or only handsets with the largest profit margins and therefore sold by all networks (i.e. Apple, Samsung). It is not consumer friendly.

This little exercise consistent with that seems to show higher handset prices in Australia for the low end phones in general.

Seems like the only winners will be Apple and Google. Unless you're saying the higher end Samsung and high end of other brands are likely to be identical and will roam without issues?

I checked the IMEI of my NZ dual sim Samsung A04 on this site which returned an OK response.

The Motorola G34 would be a good low-end option with 5G and 1 physical sim + 1 esim for $237.

Just need to ask someone in store to check the IMEI on the box before purchasing.

My phone is a Nokia G60 5G dual sim and it is tagged as working.

Oh dear this has the potential to be a monumental mess.

The trick will be convincing the staff (who may not understand) you only need the common first 8 digits which is the maker and model code, and it can't be used for anything nefarious.

Especially if you don't have managed mobiles at work, and staff have potential grey market devices with work sims, and expect easy Australian roaming.

Needing to edit all the travel documents to warn for it and add links to pre-check if a diff handset should be taken. At least 2 of the asian market makers are now working with the networks to verify the TACs and capabilities and get them added.

I just checked my NZ purchased Motorola G34 5G and it reported "contact your provider" for both IMEI numbers. I take that as meaning australian telcos will now refuse service. Although it has a telstra esim in it and was working perfectly with voLTE last month (albeit I made no emergency calls!). I am certain that model will still be being sold in Australia,  and you would think the Australia/NZ markets would be a common model. Take from that what you will.

Was in Aus GC last week for a week. We were a group of six couples. Never heard anyone mention problems with phones.

By the One NZ site - models from iPhone 6 to iPhone X are marked as voLTE capable but not roaming enabled. Which I take to be - no that won't work in Australia, at least not with a NZ SIM.

You are right, there is a small period 7-9 where the non (S) models lacked Band 28 making it useless in some markets
