Hmm, it might be early days yet for a Milestone to take over as an enterprise level email machine. I actually had my sync set to manual to avoid data charges, but since your question Mikey I have had a closer look.

There are two email clients to that come stock, one for gmail, and one for all email (incl gmail if you want). On the 'all mail' app their seems to be a minimum duration of 5 minutes you can set to automatically refresh/sync. No such option at all under the gmail app, just manual. (I haven't checked out any other apps yet via marketplace.)

Now that's pull of course, and what you want is push. Everything I have read suggests that gmail (and exchange too I believe) now does push by default if set up as IMAP. I think that's why there's no sync timer in the gmail app. However I cannot get it to work like a push device. No problems on manual refresh, but just not getting successful push when I test it.

Having scoured the web for help I see many people exclaiming how it works so well, and yet many others for whom it doesn't work at all. I would be interested to see if anyone else in NZ has had success on this hardware or any other Android device. For the moment though I'd recommend waiting till Milestone devices can get the 2.0.1 version and see if that fixes it. I will keep trying though in the meantime and let you know if I find a solution.

I'm not familiar with Google apps sorry, so can't speak to that solution at the moment. Otherwise, this email frustration is the only kink I have come across. I made lots of mistakes on the keyboard initially, but I'm very quickly getting much faster and more accurate. I bet it will be hard to transition from a Blackberry at first though ;). If I recall correctly the Blackberry keys are raised and defined much more than the almost flat Milestone keyboard.

Umm, other thoughts on the device...

GPS can sometimes be a little off, but we're talking around 4 meters or so (sometimes opposite side of the street). It will give you good walk/drive directions based off your location (just like gmaps online as if you typed your location in).

I'm hella impressed with voice search! I'm like a drunk Elvis when it comes to annunciation, but it still does a great job. I need to just say NZ after an address instead of Auckland though because it keeps thinking I mean Oakland. It also can't handle Maori place-names very well, hashing out Whakapapa like a swearword lol. It's super useable though, and better than others I have tried (admittedly many years ago).

Doubletwist is a great blessing for adding media from your PC, because it re-formats videos for you on the fly. I was manually re-encoding via VLC until I downloaded that software to my PC and it is so much easier. For other data though (eg zip files) you can simply treat it as removable media in Windows. Media player is great (wide range of alternatives in marketplace though). Screen is crystal. Speaker is nice and loud.

Form factor is sweet. Slides into pockets easily and doesn't feel fragile. I though it might be too bulky or square but it's not at all. I think being so thin helps a lot.

Camera and video working without issue. I'm sure I must be due to be hit by the 2.0 bug soon (discoloured photos), but seem to be free of it at the moment.

Hope that helps. I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you purchase one. I just can't give a very clear answer on the email vs Blackberry sorry.

Lots of people are having many issues with the phone after a little use in the UK (as in not immediately, but it comes), I'd hold off purchasing this one until the 2.01 update becomes available and see how it fares then. Looks like a really nice handset though, I may think about one when the update hits.

I personally am not sure if I want to get something that is not snapdragon, as have read at places that it becomes sluggish.

Below is the case of the droid on VZW.
"If you have a lot of Conversations, it slows the Droid down. If you have a lot of messages in a couple conversations, it slows the Droid down. If you have a lot of Conversations AND messages in each
it REALLY phucks things up. He cleaned it up for speed purposes, uses it to "show" people that come in, and found out that by keeping them at a minimum it not only increased his speed, but also slowed down/stopped his Force Quit problems."

Other than that, I have had 2 blackberry addicts who have shifted across to the droid/milestone and hasn't looked back since.

well done Zub for taking the plunge, and do share more intel as they come

Zub: I'm particularly interested to know if / when you get an OTA update for your Milestone. I can see reasons why you might not (outside of intended coverage area - UK) and reasons why you might (over wifi, how would it have any idea where you were?). Though maybe OTA updates ONLY occur via 3G....and not the general Internet. That would make some sense.

I'd like to know the answers to those questions if anyone knows (or thinks they do - a theory can at least be tested). :-)

Could be a good call Zocster. I read the tweet about the Nexus One literally 1 hour after I placed my order lol! I think it would be a nice option. The Android onscreen keyboard is actually really good, so you might not miss a physical keyboard if you go that way. The only downfall is that it is not true multitounch (eg can't press 'd' whilst holding down 's') which the keyboard can do.

I have had some very minor lag with 'coverflow' whilst loading up the previews in my video library (I have about 5GB of video content on the SD card currently. The videos themself play perfectly though). Outside of that example it's smooth-as. Seeing as I haven't really hit a performance ceiling yet in any of my daily usage or apps, then a purchase decision might still come down to form factor and which Android version.

zub: Is the sdcard in your Milestone a Class 6? They are noticeably faster than Class 2. My rough rule of thumb says for reading data, Class 2 = 2-ish MB/sec, 4 = 4MB/sec and 6 = 7MB / sec. For writing, the difference is less obvious, with 4MB - 5MB / second being the apparent maximum for Class 4 and 6 as far as I can see. At least with the Transcend / SanDick / Kingston chips I have. For Xmas, I got 2 x 8GB Class 6 Transcend sdcards. Makes using Aps 2 SD with Cyanogen Mod *much* faster. Don't really need aps2sd with the HTC Magic, but I wanted to try it out anyway. Tried it with Class 4 and it worked OK, but could lag a (very little) bit at time when moving between apps (ie: loading them on demand) via "share".  ;-)

Linuxluver: zub: Is the sdcard in your Milestone a Class 6?

Just pulled it out and it has a little 2 symbol top right so I'm guessing class 2. It's a Sandisk microSDHC. I didn't realise they came in different classes so thanks heaps for the heads up. I will be buying a bigger one later and will look for class 6.

As an unreleated aside I seem to be getting push notification of updates to my apps from marketplace (or maybe the apps auto check for updates at rebboot or something), so that's nice.

Zub: Glad to help. :-) They aren't very expensive. My Class6 8GB Transcend sdcards from elive.co.nz were about $42 each, including shipping (IIRC). I chose them because I know they are located about 1km away and delivery would be fast. The chips themselves are the same anywhere.

This is for Shano33 in response to a pm. Sorry, I can't seem to edit the message field when replying to a message from my phone for some reason, and am away from a internet connected pc. Best to share with the community anyway ;)

Gratz on the new phone! :)

1) Settings to get 3g to work.
So here's what I put in. May not all be required but if you duplicate I'm sure you'll be right.

From the settings menu (Horizontal lines on bottom bezel of screen) go:
Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. Press settings again and create an apn called 'Vodafone NZ data'. Set:
Name: Vodafone NZ data
APN: www.vodafone.net.nz
MMC: 530
MNC: 01
The rest remained untouched at their values 'not set', 'null', or 'default'.

I also set up a 2nd apn, but to be honest haven't sent an MMS yet so can't attest to viability.

Name: Vodafone NZ MMS
APN: live.vodafone.com
MMSC: http://pxt.vodafone.net.nz/pxtsend
MMS Proxy: 172.30.38.3
MMS Port: 8080
MCC: 530
MNC: 01
APN type: MMS

2) WIFI connection
Wifi works reliably for me but I found that I had to change my router to broadcast SSID, otherwise my Milestone would sometimes drop off and go to 3G (expensive), and it had trouble finding the network even when right next to the router! No problems since though. I just have to trust my router encryption to be suitable now that everyone can see my network name ;)
Note also that in most areas you should be getting the faster hsdpa (H icon next to signal strength) which will drop down to 3G when you get out of coverage. I found handover is seemless though.

Hope that helps. Totally ask any other questions you want. We will probably have a lot of shared experiences and this community on Geekzone is really helpfull.

Linuxluver, no update yet but should be very soon for UK devices. Am checking everyday so will let you know.

Mauricio, regarding my comments about not being able to edit reply message field in PM I will test further and let me know. Also some feedback on the mobile ver of the site. PM me though if you have any specific questions.

Just a comment on this one, have you got "Use HTML Editor when posting in forums or Geekzone Blog" enabled in your profile settings Zub? Using the Nokia Browser or any Opera Mini variant on my E71, I need to switch this setting off before being able to enter anything in the message field.

I think only Vodafone branded phones can access VFLive. IMEI check for access or something. Not 100% sure though.
