pih: Yeah, turns out that it wasn't so global after all.  I was up this morning watching the media event unfold on Gizmodo - the new site came up near the end of the presentation.  I have a brother in the US who has been very active in Android development (co-discovered multitouch on the first gen phones and wrote the first apps to take advantage of it), he's sending me a few, they're already ordered (it was only $33.06 tax for him in MA).  Will have to pay import duties most likely so that's going to bump up the prices a fair bit...

There will be no duty - just GST if you're unlucky and the PO charges it. You might even avoid that.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Yeah, GST I mean.  The've also started charging an extra fee of $28.75 per package or something for any packages that incur GST/duty (ie. GST is $50 or more).

I like it over the HTC G3 because it has a flash with the camera.

Should we organize a bulk shipment with all keen buyers, leave gmail address in a list and pay together or something?

I'm hanging out for the turn-by-turn navigation to be hacked again - shouldn't be long now. My brother said the (bluetooth, handsfree speakerphone) car docks that came out with the rest of the rumours are not available for purchase yet, but they shouldn't be long I don't think.

Please remember, you have to use a google account to purchase it, and if the region is set to NZ, it will be "denied", and maximum of 5 can be ordered.

Actually it denies by IP address.  My brother purchased using my gmail account and credit card (I trust him).  You'll need someone like that or alternatively a US proxy to purchase.

I got as far as checkout and it said on my Google account (linked to my NZ credit card) it could not ship. I then added a US address and I was allowed to go all the way and purchase it but I held off until I can actually check the phone out at CES. Shipping is free for overnight Fedex so I can pretty much order up till the day before I leave and go back home.

[edit]

I just bought it using my NZ credit card. I eschewed the engraving since that adds 3 days shipping.  I won't see it until Saturday since I am off to CES tomorrow. When I get it I will slot in my  VF SIM and see how that goes.

One more thing, each phone (up to the max of 5) must be ordered separately - there is no facility to order more than one at a time - just means that (if you have a NZ c/c like I do) you'll also be hit with the bank's "convenience" fee for each transaction...

A couple of things

1. The NZD is doing quite well against the USD now so it's a good time to order
2. It's easy enough to get a US IP address in NZ (though being here it wasn't hard :-) )

I'm currently in the UK and am considering buying one prior to returning to NZ in the second half of the year. At the moment is it really a case of 'too early to tell' with regard to it working on either the TC or VF networks (or both)? I wouldn't be making any snap purchases though, so may wait for more reviews before taking the plunge.

I think it's pretty safe to say that it will work fine on Vodafone, but I believe XT's 2100 network is patchy in city centres at best, non-existant elsewhere at worse, and no GPRS fallback (correct me anyone if I'm wrong).  I've played with more-or-less identical US-imported Android phones before and they had no trouble accepting my Vodafone SIM.
