I don't think it will ever beat a purpose built GPS (like Tom Tom, Navman, etc) simply due to the size if the screen. But I love it because of the convenience of it always being in my pocket.

The application is pretty nice and the turn by turn with voice works well..

Does the street name get spoken or is it just "turn left" etc ?

My Google Nexus One arrived this morning. Tuesday 19th. Un boxed it, put in battery (something you can't do on an iphone), checked volted spec on charger, is 110-240v, found adaptor and plugged in too charge.

Damn been 5 minutes and charge light still not turned green.
5min 30sec charge light still not green, arggggggg! how long will I have to wait!
new toy, new toy, want to play, want to play!

Now this button does what? whoops!

lchiu7, how've you found the battery life thus far? My iPhone 3G with just WiFi on, and no bluetooth dies around 4-5PM (After being taken off charge at 6AM). Not a lot of use, maybe 30 mins on the phone each day and 15-30 mins of emailing?

Just turn left which is not different from a Tom Tom I have used. I am using a UK lady voice which seems more soothing than any of the US ones :-)

Not flash - maybe a day or day and half. I have WiFi on all the time and connect to 3G networks. Since the office has wifi it's connected there all the time so when I do web stuff on the phone and getting data sync'ed (I only sync Gmail I think and the calendar) it's not using my data on my data plan.

I do have screen brightness set to automatic.

If I turn on the GPS then battery disappears rapidly! But then you should use a car adapter since that is the most likely time you need GPS.

GPS only turns on when you use the GPS application which for me is Copilotlive. You can see it working sinecd a little satellite dish icon comes up on the status screen. I just checked - it also turns on when you use Google Maps since it shows you your exact location on the map.

You can set sync options. I have background sync turned on and auto-sync. But for the apps that it affects I selectively turn off things. I have it on for Facebook

, Gmail (only the calendar so sync with Exchange) and nothing else. If I want to check email, either on the home email or Exchange, I do a pull.

I also seem to be getting background news updates but I am not sure where they are being set. Since I check my data usage each day, and it's not going crazy, I leave it on. I am also using twitdroid but that only appears to sync when it's started and I usually don't have it running.

Generic Android question: What sort of SIP clients are available in the Market?

What Apps have you installed thus far that you'd recommend, or like?

Do you find you have to power cycle the phone for any reason, such as apps not launching? Or does it generally just tick along nicely?

What about Sync'ing, such as Music / Pictures? How have you found that? Do you just copy / paste, or is there a 3rd party app you're using to manage playlists etc?

To answer your questions

Speech recognition is quite good - I have set it to UK English and I don't personally have a strong Kiwi accent

but YMMV

I have installed Copilotlove, Sipdroid, Twidroid, Dolphin (web browser that supports multitouch) and PicSay - a picture browser editor (sort of) that also supports multi-touch. That's all so far.

There is a Music Player that handles Playlists etc but I haven't delved into it since I don't listen to music on my phone much. Pictures I just took over from my other phone via the USB cable. It can sync Picasa pictures but do that on wifi unless you have a great data plan.

Pictures appear to show in three areas - the camera, gallery (stuff you've imported) and for me Bluetooth pictures I sent over from a PC

On my HTC Magic, GPS being on has no real impact on the battery life PROVIDED no app is actively using GPS. But if something is using it, WfiTracker or Google Maps (in showing directions mode)........zooom......down goes the battery.

I've also found that if I go for a long walk (2-3 hours) and stream music over 3G (got 6GB/ month.....why waste it...) and listen via Bluetooth stereo headset....then i can kill a full battery in about 4 hours. So I have a spare battery.

The chatter I've seen on the Nexus One is that battery life is pretty good. For a Smartphone that usually means you made it home for supper with a not-quite-dead battery. :-)

No third party batteries out there yet and even Google aren't selling them. But I have picked up a spare USB cable and car charger so I won't drain the battery when using the GPS

First impression

Screen is bloody fantastic.

Went to android market place and tried speach text seach for "co-pilot" gps software.

We have got to open up a Nexus speach text thread.

For Co-pilot I got "tall pine nuts" who needs games I can play with speach to text all day.

Now this button does what? whoops!

Help problem I can not figure out.

Android Market searched for copilot, does not come up in results. In fact no pay for application does. Googled extensively, note that some countries this will happen as paid apps are restricted, but NZ is not one of those countries. On top of which Ichiu7 has done this.

I suspect maybe some button or menu option I am not getting? I am at a loss.

Can anyone else see paid applications in Android Market.

One thing to note which should not make any difference is I am trying wothout any sim card over wifi as do not want to use up data allowance on Vodafone.

Now this button does what? whoops!

With the HTC Hero, if you have Wifi on, 3g is not used. Is this not the same with the Nexus?

@twobikes yep, I can see paid apps and didn't do anything special. I've had the common problem of apps getting stuck on "starting download" though. Seems to resolve after a few tries and some patience.

I just did it again. I am using wifi but I do have my SIM card in. I think the N1 uses wifi over 3G. Anyway the application came up instantly when I did a search and showed I had installed it.
