This is a bit of a facepalm but what you use this site to download it straight or do you need some sort of proxy to get around the ip block on the google site

For setting up google checkout i didnt use a proxy. i would advise not to for security.
But you need to use a proxy to buy it.
I was having trouble with the webproxys like hidemyass.com so found a proper IP one and configured my browser to use it for the time.

raab and Dargor: There are no phones that do both UMTS 850 and 900. So far, they do only one or the other. The issue may be cost or engineering....but there is clear demand them, yet they do not exist. That suggests to me it's an engineering issue that may relate to cost.....as in it may be technically possible, but you would n't pay the price required for the phone that may be able to do it. This is my suggestion as to why such phones do not exist from any vendor, anywhere.

If only Google had not limited launch to US/UK and a couple of places...

Sounds like they tried to pull an Apple.

Mine has arrived (through www.myus.com) in 5 days. No need to use proxy server for ordering, go to "http://www.google.com/phone/?hl=en&gl=US&s7e=" and order straight away.

Do not forget to set up the APN (Name: TelecomData, APN: internet.telecom.co.nz, the rest: leave empty) to get 3G working.

The device is stunningly beautiful and quite fast. iPhone looks ancient by its side.

Well, i've bitten the bullet after another despairing weekend with the N86 and have a Nexus One on the way to the folks address in Calgary and they'll hopefully send it on to me within the week.

I guess i need to find some nice wee apps to install and make it delicious.

Yes Google's checking is pretty limited. Once you get through the first IP region check, it checks no more. In fact as the poster noted, I did the proxy thing to get past the first check but from then I was able to get to ordering one. But I didn't since I have one already - it was just a test.

Actually I have a friend coming over soon from the US and might have them bring over a AT&T one in case I can find a local buyer :-)

My Nexus One should be here next Tuesday.....having sat in Customs or DHL over Easter.

I see on CNN's business news this morning that China Mobile to to install a 3G network. Now maybe we will be able to get cheap 3G mobiles from China rather than the quad band GSM only one that are sold here at present from PB Tech and parallel Imports etc..

I just got mine and thought i'd do a little howto. Hopefully it will help someone. Im only detailing the parts i found confusing, if i've left something out feel free to ask.

I choose to do the ship-it-forward part through comgateway, because they are in Portland Oregon. where there is no US sales tax, i think this saved about $100nz. I know other people here have used other services. If you have family or friends in the US you should get them to ship-it-forward to you, you might be able to avoid NZ customs tax that way also.

Howto buy a nexus one from google to NZ.

1) Setup your comgateway account, they will ship-it-forward to you in NZ.
To do this go to the site follow the steps. You can verify your credit card wich may save time later, to do this they will charge a small random ~$20 amount to your account and get you to tell them what it was, this amount will be credited to your account. If your going to do this dont do it at the same time as paying for the shipping, like i did. otherwise you wont be able to use the credit, or youll have to wait longer. If you dont verify your credit card, i think they just wait longer.
2) Setup google checkout.
Again the site follow the steps, give them your credit card details name and your "US address" from comgateway, give them the comgateway phone number. Dont think they actually use it, if you try other numbers they will block ones that arnt valid for the location.
3) Order the nexus from google.
To do this you need to go through a us proxy, otherwise you get the "phone not available in your contry message". You can go through the comgateway website which has a built in proxy. This is probably best because it brings you to the place to do the next step. for me this cost $810, i got a spare battery also.
4) Tell comgateway to expect the nexus.
go to the comgateway site, enter "google.com/phone"(or something) into the "I want to shop at" box. The proxy will open in a new window, and in another window will be a comgateway ordering form. it will show your "US addres", then submit the invoice number. This is the google recept number from google checkout, the "google order #" mine was 15 numbers.
5) Wait for it to get to comgateway
6) Pay shipping to comgateway.
With your credit card. If you didnt setup your credit card with them before dont bother verifying, it will cost you ~$20 for nothing. For me this was about $55.

I shipped with DHL.
7) wait for it to get to DHL shipping nz.
you will get an email, should.
8) Pay customs to DHL nz.
This was easy give them a call, pay by credit card. for me this was $110
9) Wait for it to arive at your door.

10) Setup with XT
This took me a little while, wasnt very intuative. I didnt know what the option button was and came to a blank screen so i thought i was lost.
menu -> settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> access point names -> this page will be empty. press the option button "4 horrizontal lines" -> new APN -> all you need is a name and a APN, APN being "wap.telecom.co.nz"
