Good to know about google maps. Does it need to use 3G / GPRS data for navigation ? Just asking cause i was seeing a vdeo the other day and it said its all free but it downloads content over internet - not good if u r not on a plan.

Yep, it needs to have net access. I'm on a data plan though so it's not a biggie. I preload all the map data at home so the only data that it downloads on the move is the routing stuff. Works out pretty well.
ohh k k .. good to know. is it possible that once maps are downloaded at home - it can run just off that - without connecting to the net. The reason i ask is, you would realistically need the net for searching, or traffic updates while navigation.
But - for navigation, it should be literally running of the downloaded maps alone.

Well if you're not connected to the net, the only thing the maps would do is display your current position. If you want to get directions - you'll need the net.
I tried CoPilot - one of the very few decent navigation programs I've come across so far (on the Android). It's nice, but the biggest gripe is that the maps are very dated. (Actually it looks very similar to the Google Maps). For eg, it doesn't show the new SH20 extensions in Auckland. Otherwise, it works pretty well. I know Google is going to update their maps soon, but not sure when CoPilot would.
The other decent program I've heard of is iGO for Android. I've used iGO on WinMo before and it's pretty awesome - possibly the best cellphone-GPS program I've seen. More importantly, they update the maps often. Unfortunately, at the moment it seems to be available only for low-resolution devices. High res devices like the HTC Desire would be able to run the program but it'll only occupy half of the screen space :/
For now I'm happy with Google Navigation for daily usage, but for serious stuff I would go with my tried-and-trusted Garmin.
