Hey guys,

I've just been on the phone with a few of the Telecom stores. It looks like it's been delayed AGAIN as of this morning. I rang around a whole bunch of stores testing the water to see if it was simply a shortage of phones and possibly not all stores had them... or if it was a Nationwide delay.

According to every single store I rang they all are saying the same thing. Notification came through to them this morning saying that the launch has been delayed again, however this time they were not given an ETA (unlike on the 1st when they were given an ETA of the 8th).

I cant help but wonder if they're having issues with branding the ROM, or if they have some inside info that Motorola will be pushing out 2.2 extremely soon.

Maybe in their infinite wisdom they are delaying it until the 2.2 ROM becomes available, might save them a lot of effort in branding two different versions of the ROM.

Fingers crossed I get a call in the next few days telling me I can go pick up my new Milestone, and I can put my Nokia E75 to bed for good. :)

Thanks for that, I was getting very close to asking Telecom myself. I'm looking forward to this phone!

My other futile hope is that they actually give us the Milestone XT... not much chance of that one though!

A good friend of mine has been using one on Vodafone that he imported some time ago. The device itself is relatively old. Slow CPU and limited RAM.

However, after we rooted it, enabled an overclock of Minimum 125MHz, maximum 1.2GHz. It performs better than the HTC Desire that we have been playing with as well.

The minimal amount of RAM (256MB as opposed to Desires 512MB) doesn't really seem to make a difference either.

The way the Android OS handles RAM is exceptional, whenever you open something new requiring some RAM to be freed, it seems to suspend the oldest process... So it basically makes the phone seem like it has infinite RAM.

Very clever Google :)

The Milestone XT720 is identical hardware spec, No QWERTY (Boo Hiss), higher megapixel camera. The screen is also different, aparently doesn't feel as smooth whilst using swipe and pinch/zoom gestures. And the screen is also somewhat recessed into the bezel making it difficult to type using the on screen keyboard.

IMHO the XT720 isn't the Milestone of choice :)

IMHO the XT720 isn't the Milestone of choice :)

I was actually under the impression that it was a better device, but on the other hand I hadn't looked into it since I hadn't heard of a local release (I should know better than to believe that newer is better!). I didn't know that it lacked a keyboard, so yeah, I'd actually prefer the "normal" Milestone :)

Im Pretty disapointed. Yet another Delay. I was looking forward to getting this phone - I still might! But the Longer Telecom keep delaying it, the more likely I am to buy the Desire from Vodafone when it gets released (End of the month??)

Has there been any statement or anything from Telecom explaining the delay? Im guessing no but thought i would ask just in case.

An updated launch date is due to be announced late next week. Therefore I'd guess that the launch itself is not until at least the following week :(

Oh really? By Then you would really only have to wait a week ish for the Desire (Providing VF Releases by the End of july)

It's an easy decision for me; no Vodafone coverage where I live. So, unless Telecom announces a better Android phone, it'll be the Milestone for me.

Hi Everyone,

First post here, so apologies in advance for any gaffs on my part...

So here's my dilemma....

I've managed to locate a source for legit, unlocked Milestones which are 100% Telecom XT compatible.... This is a well known and reputable supplier...

The downside:

They are about $100 dearer than the Telecom offer.
They don't come with the extra goodies of the Telecom offer (Windshield mount, sd card),

The upside:

They have them in stock.
They are fully unlocked.
I can have one in my hot little hands within 5 Business Days....

So, do I pay more (technically for less) to have one in 5 days guaranteed, or do I wait yet another week for (potentially) yet another delay from Telecom?

And is this delay indeed due to Telecom branding? And is that branding going to put me in the same boat as with some other Telcos where you have to wait (a very long time) for *their* Android updates rather than being able to grab them when they are hot?

Or to put it another way, if I posted the link to them here on this forum, would *you* hold off, or grab your CC and go for it???

Comments, thoughts, suggestions please?

Sounds to me like you need to be asking yourself the question: "Is my having the Milestone for a couple of weeks before everyone else worth $100 and a windshield mount and an SD card to me?"

The word on the street is the delay isn't to do with the phone per se, but that Telecom is spending some time pulling together a good launch offer for it (i.e. not just phone pricing).

Personally I'm curious to see what they do, so I'm going to wait. They've had a few difficulties with XT recently so maybe they're taking a bit of care to make sure this launch earns some goodwill back.

My 2 rubles, anyway. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for your insight CJ, and to be honest seeing the question posed in that precise way has me thinking again. The +$100, plus the windshield mount, and the Sd card is probably getting close to $250 value, which on reflection is quite a whack to pay extra just to be first off the block :).

I don't think any launch offers outside of pricing and bundled goodies will impact me. I'm already a contract customer, but not yet in position for an upgrade deal, so mine will be a straight buy. I'll save the contract upgrade deal for when they eventually (hopefully) get the Droid 2 :).

The delay question is an interesting one... Today I have been given 3 different reasons for the delay, from three different stores.

One said the stock has been delayed in shipping, the second alluded to delays in the branding process, the third said they they (Telecom) were trying to resolve some email compatibility issues....

Strangely, the one that I give the least credence to (Email compatibility? Come on the device has been on the market overseas for over 9 months now..) came from an actual Telecom store.

The other two reasons, either of which sound more credible to me, were from Telecom resellers. And one of those said they had been given a revised launch date of July 15th.

Maybe I should hold out for another week and see what happens :).

Thanks for the suggestion eXDee, and if it the Desire had a physical keyboard I'd be doing it :).

Unfortunately I have a 'thing' about OSKs in that the 'pads' of my my thumbs are large and insensitive making typing on an OSK an exercise in frustration. Lord knows I've tried with my wife's iPhone (which I understand to have one of the best OSKs around) but I just can't get any kind of rhythm or accuracy going.

In contrast I tried a Milestone the other day and was really impressed how well the physical keyboard worked for me.

So wanting a physical keyboard, a large screen, decent resolution, Android OS, and a Telecom connection, the Droid /Milestone seems to be the only player in town for me.

I'd love to jump straight to the Droid 2, but considering it has taken almost a year for the Droid 1 (Milestone) to come out in a 850/2100 standard, I don't hold out any hope of the August 2010 release Droid 2 being available for 850/2100 for another year to eighteen months (Sigh)....

To be honest, Im tempted to just cancel my XT contract and sign up for Vodafone.

Then purchase the Milestone from einfo dot co dot nz for $650.

Or maybe the Nexus One for $974. At least with the Nexus One I will have countless custom ROMs to use.

And being on Vodafone I will at least be able to get my hands on unlocked devices far easier than on Telecom.

A few of my mates have also ordered from MobiCity in Australia and purchased Desires that work on NZ XT.

They seem to work fine as long as you get the APN's correct (PRO TIP: Case sensitive :P )
