I'm going to try to write my blog post on it now (right now). Wish me luck.

Good luck! :)

For better or worse I've just ordered the M002
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.42071

I haven't managed to download the new firmware from ftp://ekenind.gicp.net/ yet, it claims M002_Android_1.7.4.rar doesn't exist.

Also I haven't read a straight answer about whether the SlateDroid firmwares actually work on the M002.

Something I didnt think of was power supply.. bugger. Will need to get an adapter or hunt down a replacement power supply.

Is the m002 the one with the supposed 600mhz processor? Other than the webcam I don't see the difference between this one and the one I ordered?

Did you manage to download it?  Yes, I notice files are listed but won't download too.

The power supply I have with my M100 is 100v-240v so it should work anywhere provided you have the correct "prongs" on it to plug it into the wall. All you probably need is a plug adaptor, not a new power supply.

Things are getting interesting - or freaky. From:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2010/06/eken_m001_mid_hacked_to_offer_better_specs.html

"Low cost tablet devices are easy on the wallet, but they always lack some killer feature here and there. Some folks aren't going to be satisfied with that, and are perfectly happy to take the situation into their own hands, and one user did just that, hacking the Eken M001 Android-powered MID into something more powerful than it originally was. Improvements include bumping the battery from a 1600mAh capacity to a whooping 5200mAh, netting him about 7-12 hours of usage. A USB hub and flash drive were also added, including a few additional connectors to allow for external devices. Finally, it also sports something that Apple's iPad currently lacks - a front-facing camera. Not too shabby for a budget MID, isn't it? Check out a video of it."

Played with one yesterday :) quite slow(compared to my phones) but overall the build quality wasn't as bad as expected!

Also played with an iPad in the same office(very strange coincidence) and tbh, it felt cheap, it got taken off me when i threatened to break it over my knee though :(

This website seems quite interesting regarding cheap android tablets running rockchip
http://armdevices.net/category/chip-provider/rockchip/

I was thinking a tablet running android with gps might make a nice car computer.

Still waiting on mine to be shipped... "Waiting for Supplier" always seems to take forever. I've read the comments for my unit and it seems the 'front facing camera' is a still photo camera only.. no video. That's a real bummer.. Still will find out more when it arrives.

Front facing still camera seems a bit pointless, only good for myspace shots.

Keeping tabs on this thread.  Seems quite interesting.

I kinda like the idea of a cheap android tablet.

Probably kinda defunct when i buy an iPad but at US100 you cant really go wrong can you.

It seems way overspecced for what you pay.  If it can get the android apps running then its definately an iPad on the cheap

They (M001 models) are being touted as 600MHz.....but the real-life performance of the things is 174.48 BogoMIPs, which (according to Slatedroid for this processor - Via MW8505) translates into 350MHz.

Apparently the CPU is actually rated at 300Mhz, but Eken have overclocked it to 350MHz.

I do not know if any of the above is verifiably true other than the 174,48 BogoMIPs which I have seen myself on my device.

But I have owned a 528MHz ARM6 Android phone and these devices are a bit slower than that, so about 350MHz feels about right.

They are a bit on the sluggish side, but the v1.7.4 firmware update does improve speed a bit. The keyboard is more responsive. Keyboard touch accuracy is hugely improved if you calibrate it with an object with a very fine tip, so you can nail the cross hairs as exactly as possible.

I like mine and would easily buy it again. I probably won't be "wasting" over a thousand dollars on any tablet - particularly not a restriction-riddled one from Apple - so these devices scratch my tablet itch nicely and cheaply.
