I have successfully installed froyo using the goldcard method and it is working beautifully. Software number 2.09.405.8. Only problem is that it is still bloody showing distances in miles on google places! Also I still have peep and teeter which I still can't uninstall. But no more plurk etc!

I've got what I need to flash my Desire to WWE, but not the original HK CSL ROM for restoring it to, if I need to. HTC have been pretty good at answering my questions but haven't got back to me yet with an answer to the key question about whether restoring to the original is really needed for warranty purposes. If its not needed then we don't have to worry about it (as long as we want to deal directly with HTC over warranties and forget the third-party retailer's warranty).
I know it was mentioned earlier but couldn't you just use Nandroid to back up your original asian rom before loading the wwe ? That's certainly what I did with my Hero. Had to have root access and an amonra recovery loaded first though.
The other thing about root access is that as far as I know it will be required if you want to remove applications that are part of the base rom (i.e. not downloaded and installed later).

Actually thinking about it when I first got my Desire I did have a look at the warranty terms and I could not see anything that said changing the software invalidated the warranty. Perhaps I will have another look tonight.

I have had another read of the HTC warranty booklet I got with the phone and I cannot find anything in it which says changing the software it is supplied with invalidates the warranty. The nearest appears to be "unauthorized modifications" but that is int he context of the hardware and in any event the clause goes onto say that that does not matter if it is a failure in material or workmanship.
It does specifically say that country specific elements on the phone, where you got the phone in another country is not a defect though. So in my case I can't say the Telstra stuff on it is a defect.
Since i got my phone from Mobi city I had a look at there waranty terms as well. They say:
This Limited Warranty does not cover defects or alleged defects where the item was used with, or connected to, a product, accessories, software and/or service not manufactured, supplied or authorised by MobiCity, or was used otherwise than for its intended use. Defects are often caused by viruses from unauthorised access to services, other accounts, computer systems or networks. This unauthorised access can take place through hacking, password-mining, and a variety of other means.
So it seems as long as the defect cannot be traced to the new ROM then you have a claim (although it is not totally clear) although if you brick your phone they don't need to do anything. Outside that most claims for faulty hardware should be fixed and if it does break/stop working how will they prove it was ever the software anyway?
