Fresh, new, unsullied by the Jobsinator.

I just don't like Apple's constant insitence that they ARE tech. They ARE right. They WILL tell you how to use your device. They DON'T tell you anything until you're ready to hear it.

Also, the choices are infinite...well...3 or four different good choices right now. And everything is transferrable to new handsets once you upgrade, change whatever...unlike being tied to one manufacturer because of your choice of OS (or iOS in my case).

Don't get me wrong...I really enjoy my 3GS, but I'm not that enamoured with the iPhone 4 and if I lose or break my iPhone, I really don't have a choice...I gets what I gets.

Question - do you know of any good GPS apps available for NZ such as Tom Tom navigation?

I've been using the hacked "Maps [brut]"

It's come a long way since Google cut off turn-by-turn Nav globally back in November. This alternate version of Google Maps exists alongside the main one....and can happily be a difference version (4.3 and 4.4 - whatever).

The voice part isn't flawless, but very close. For free, it's awesome. To use it you really want to get a car dock with your phone. :-)

Google will - at some point - turn nav back on for NZ...and then the solution will be obvious.

Yes, you do need data to use it. Trying this on pre-pay will make you sad and poor.

If you don't want to use data, then get the very latest version of Co-Pilot plus the AU+NZ maps. A mate has it here at work on his Desire and he really likes it.

Handsomedan, I agree with you totally. With Android, it seems easier to transfer all of your apps and content from one phone to another. Whereas with Apple, it wants you to remove all of your music when you use a different computer to sync etc etc.

You can use the "iSyncr" app to sync any Android phone with iTunes...as many phones as you like..

Or DoubleTwist. They have an Android client for their desktop app.

Portable WIFI hotspot is built into Android 2.2, no app required.

Here are some screenshots. Nexus One / Android v2.2 / Nav & Maps [brut] v4.3 / 800x480

You can use Maps [brut] v4.3 as Maps....and you start "Nav [brut]" to kick off the navigation...and it uses Maps [brut].

1. The initial Nav menu
2. The initial Nav map screen after destination address, but before GPS lock
3. GPS locked and you are underway.

They were taken a few minutes apart as I was doing something else in the meantime.....but the flow is accurate for a single session.

You'd want to be able to charge the phone in the car as GPS, always on and 3G data will drain the battery fairly rapidly (about 4 hours continuous use?) I have two batteries for any phone I own, plus a 150w DC to AC inverter in the car ($69 from DSE) plus an AC to USB power supply so one power adaptor can charge an USB device - phone, iPod...whatever.

^ Wow now that's pretty impressive!!! Thanks for your post. Once you get the maps stored on your phone, the world is your oyster! Impressive stuff. Does it say street names?
