Decided to try the Quadrant benchmarking app in an Android v2.2 emulator running on my AMD Opteron(?) 3000+ (aging) 64-bit PC running Ubuntu 10.4 Linux.

It doesn't look good for the emulator... LOL! My Nexus One is literally ten times faster.

(In case it isn't obvious...I'm dying of the flu.....*SNIFF*)

The android emulator on my e8400 @3.6ghz with 32bit Ubuntu is also very slow :P Perhaps an inherent flaw with the emulator?

Brendan r u running android 2.2 or custom rom(cyanogen or bugless beast)?

I can't get past 1.076 GHz without becoming unstable.

I can't get past 1.076 GHz without becoming unstable. ?

I'm running the opendesire 3.4.2 Rom from xda developers. 99% Stable, with the 'intetactive' cpu governor. I also run 'autokiller' which adjusts when android expels dormant apps - I usually have over 260 legs free. Ive had more sometimes. I also run apps2sd+ .

Heres my nexus one overclocked to 1.113mhz. Can get mine up to 1.228mhz without a hitch but the performance gains aren't worth the excessive battery usage, I wonder why yours becomes unstable at these levels.
Running CM RC3 at the moment.

Chip ratings will vary by the die they came out of.

A chip rated at - say 1GHz - will reliably do that clockspeed. It may be able to do a lot more....or maybe not....depends on the quality of the batch.

Same thing happened with the Acer Liquid. It has Snapdragons rated at 768Mhz...and some people could reliably clock them up past 1GHz...and others couldn't. Mine would go completely crazy after about 920MHz while other guys were running all day on 1.113GHz.

Once you're over the red line, it comes down to the quality of the batch of silicon your processor came from. Luck is required. Baking chips isn't a perfect science...there is some variability from batch to batch with the "offical" rating being the manufacturers guaranteed reliable clockspeed.
