networkn: Thanks for all the replies, turns out I am done with my VF Contract and if I am prepared to re-sign with them for 3 YEARS, they will give me a decent phone. I can now take my pick of devices..
Nexus One, Galaxy S, HTC Desire.. Not sure which to pick now that price isn't as much of a concern (though it's still rape and pillage with pricing at VF paying more than RRP).
I like the look of the Galaxy S, but I don't love the Samsung Skins (TouchWiz), I much prefer the HTC Sense, however I guess if there was a compelling reason to go for the Galaxy I could build a bridge...
I've got a Nexus One and today I loaded eViLD's "NXSense" v1.16 on it. So that gives you an Nexus One with Sense UI, 720p HD vidcam (the Desire version), overclockable to 1.119GHz (mine is right now - solid as a rock) and FM Radio and fully functional bluetooth.
UPDATE: It wasn't actually hitting 1.119GHz....and when I made it, the phone crashed within about 20 seconds....so 1.07522 GHz will have to be good enough. :-)
Wifi tether works provided you manually select the channel.
USB tether is still broken. I never use it.
It comes with MS Exchange support.
I've been using it since lunch time. Nothing but good news so far.
Nexus One is old enough now you might pick one up for $700 second hand. You can have Sence UI...and get HD video and FM radio....and the phone is designed to be modded. It's the reference platform for Android v3.0.
Not a bad package. But modding it means unlocking the bootloader and there's no warranty after that. If you get one that came from the US any warranty means returning it to HTC in the US.....and I honestly couldn't be stuffed doing it. I'd just buy another phone.
