I think you will find the Optus version doesn't support 850MHz WCDMA though...

Yeps, the Optus version is 3G 900/2100. Will work on XT only in the large cities or where there's 3G 2100 coverage. If you want to use the A10 on XT, don't get the Optus version.

It is really for Vodafone, not Telecom. Don't recommend relying on 2100MHz to Telecom users.

lokhor: I just got my first Android device, a Galaxy S so not really sure what the other versions are like. Galaxy S is quite laggy if you run a lot of apps though, GPS is a little dodgy too.

What do you see as "laggy"? I mean...which app(s) specifically aren't responsive in your view?

I'm curious to know what a fresh pair of eyes sees.

I have a Nexus One and have owned previous phones...so I know which things go fast because they're easy and quick and which thinks take longer because they require a lot of processing or network communication....which can drag if the network is slow....which has little to do with the phone.

Have you rooted the phone and run the lag-fix? I have and the phone now runs like a bat out of hell.

For some phones with stock Android the 2.2 version is required to support Calendar ActiveSync features which can be a deal breaker. 1.6 is really good for testing on the one hand, but slightly feature limiting from a development point of view.

Ok that's totally off topic.... sorry. Nice to see some more devices!

Did not know that about Telecom. Luckily I'm on Vodafone and no issues here or in Aus so far.

I've been using Garmin devices for years and I must say there Customer Service is terrible.

Back to another point I made. Like a lot of Kiwi's I'm back and forth to Aus. You can go to Harvey Noman and buy a cheap Garmin GPS preloaded with City Navifator Australia and NZ 2011.10. On the Garmin website you can only buy Aus and NZ as a combo and not seperate so why the hell does Optus and Telecom do this?? Do you think the Netherlands version only has Dutch maps - no I don't think so.

Thankfully Google is your friend for Garmin Maps.

Apparently the "lag fix" is a kind of RAM disc that effectively caches reads / writes to make it look faster on benchmarks. But for reading / writing to the sdcard or internal storage, it's not effective. On the Quadrant benchmark, almost 50% of the speed improvement was on the write measures.

I think I understood the write-up properly. Anyone - feel free to correct me if I'm erring on it. :-)

From the whirpool forums in Aus. Somebody posted an email they had received from Garmin.

Got this email reply from support Friday.

Dear Geoff,

Thank you for the email!
We are working on Android 2.1 upgrade for A10 at the moment and will
make the public announcement when it's ready.
Please check our official website for future update.

I have now installed the one click lag fix for my galaxy s and it's definitely not stuttering as much if at all.
