Went thru the above process a few weeks back but have just upgraded to Relax 2... which is slightly faster. (Thanks LL)

If you're new to all this.... You can buy an Eken tablet on Trademe for under $150 and out of the box you'll be glad you didn't pay more. The firmware it ships with makes you actually question the spend.

But upgrade the firmware (as above) and it's a totally new device and well worth the small price. It is not a high speed unit and does have limitations.... (what do you really expect for <$150)... but you can, as I do, use it around the house to read the headlines, check the weather (or Geonet), keep an eye on trademe and use it as an e-book reader.... with the better firmware it's handy, usable and good value.

Hi,

did you have any issues with the wifi connection ? I don't broadcast my SSID and it doesn't always connect properly unless I broadcast it. I'll have another play around with it tonight as I only upgraded to Relax 2 last night.

Relax and Slatedroid Mercury have the wifi transmit power turned way down to 25 out of a possible 100 (milliwatts).

You can change it back to the default 100.

There is a file you can edit (I use Root Explorer's built in editor) in:

/system/etc/Wireless/RT(something)/RT(something).dat

Long-press the file and a menu pops up in Root Explorer and editing is one of the options (scroll down the list)

Once in the editor, go down to the line with "Txpower=25" in it...and edit it so it has a higher number. I use 80 or 100. Save and exit (by pressing Menu in Root Explorer) and then shutdown and re-boot. Your M001 will no longer be 'whispering' at 25 milliwatts.

It may have nothing to do with your hidden SSID (which may be a waste of time as there are several apps that can show the SSID of a "hidden" AP anyway so it isn't really hidden)...but it will improve range and throughput because the AP can now 'hear' your tablet much better.

Talking of e-books, has anyone use the Kindle app on one of these tablets? I use this and have paid for a few books on my Galaxy S, but would like to have a way to make the books available for other people to read. Kindle should allow me to sync the books I've read across more than one device.

The Kindle app, like the Kobo app, is linked to your account, which is Amazon for the Kindle. I've used both on numerous devices, including four M001s, with no isuues.

Relax v2.0 clocked to the max and with a 128mb swap file, is easily the best firmware *ever* as far as performance is concerned. I really notice the 14% overclock when typing and web browsing. It's still desperately short on RAM, but it's more reslonsive than ever.

Having real trouble using root explorer though.

First time i ran it, it crashed at the superuser request screen and wouldnt work.
So i unistalled it then reinstalled it, but now it gets to the superuser request screen and hangs their for about 1 min then an error comes up saying ""Sorry, Activity SU request is not responding"

Anyone else had this problem or know what i can do to get root explorer working?

You need to tick / enable the USB Debugging in Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development.
