ChillingSilence: Ah OK thanks for that, dunno why I didn't think to do that.

Yeah it's using the SWAP file, only 4MB of SWAP used, the rest is free on the 140MB partition (approx).

Bummer that it's not letting me install the Swype beta, was really looking forward to that. Can't wait to get home when I can actually have a good play, not supposed to be using it at work, but I got it delivered here coz I couldn't wait :D

What's average battery life for yourself (very roughly) with WiFi on ?

I've had up to 3 hours with wifi on and reading a book. Screen brightness makes a big difference. In the evening a dimly lit room and brightness on low can see you go for over 3 hours as an e-reader. Actively surfing the Net is somewhere between 2 and 3 hours - closer to 3 - depending on how good your wifi reception is.

Relax has wifi Txpower set to 25 out of 100 (milliwatts). That is fine if you're close to the AP. But I edit system file concerned to get it back up to 80 milliwatts.....or the AP can't "hear" my M001. It's 'whispering' at 20-25 milliwatts from the place I usually sit to use it. It's in (IIRC) /system/etc/Wireless/RTsomething/RTsomething.dat. The value is "Txpower=   "

Ah thanks, I was wondering why the range was *so* low ...

What would you recommend the best way to edit that file on the device would be? I'm used to nano / vi, but I can't see any "Ctrl" key ;)

I bought Root Explorer. It makes it easy. It's a root-capable file manager with an editor built in and support for file permissions. If I buy only one app on a gmail address for a device...it's this one (assuming I'm rooting it, of course).

You long-press the file you want to edit, scroll the menu that comes up down to "Edit the File" (or whatever  - it's obvious) and then "Menu" to "Save & Exit" when done. Shutdown and re-boot and your wifi is "louder".

The default value from the manufacturer is 100. It's also the max allowed in the EU (so I'm told).

Some people feels the device gets too warm or they want to save power.....but I don't think it's too warm and the power saved is trivial (IMHO).

For some reason I wasn't able to install root-explorer, so instead I emailed myself the file, edited it, and tried to email it back, but the version of gapps wouldn't download the .dat file. I ended up copying it from my PC to the SD Card and then using the terminal to manually move the file. Much better results with the WiFi now.

I also tried to install Swype. I'm signed up for the Beta so I copied the installer .apk (About 50KB) across, tried to install, but it complained about the device not matching. Figures, coz I've already installed it on my N1.
So I used Astro to try and backup Swype from my N1, copied the .apk across. Anyways it installed but when I use it, it complains and says Swype was customized for another device and will operate in limited functionality mode, and to contact Swype about it. I tried, but so far no response, and it's been 36 hours (I'm eager!).

I'm not looking to go posting an apk file here for everybody to use, considering the beta is still closed, but definitely want to be able to use Swype on the M001, it would really bring it to life, especially considering tap-input isn't 100% accurate. I know it's probably not your normal run-of-the-mill query, but you wouldn't happen to have any ideas on this would you? :D

TIP: Login to Gmail through the web browser. Bookmark it. Do the "Gears" update. This way, you can download pretty much any attachment this way. The limitations on the Gmail app mean I never use it when dealing with attachments. You can't add any (unless you "share" from another app) and you can't download them if they aren't some kind of media file.

I went through this with Swype. Pain in the backside. Beta hassles plus activation issues put me right off. I sent them email. They answered two weeks later. Suggested I try again. Oh.

I bought "SlideIt" instead. Just as good functionally for swipe-typing. Not a beta. Finished product. Installs on anything. No issues...other than taking 4+ touches to make a smiley.

I bought root explorer today but i have a problem, it crashed during the first time i run it. But now everytime i run it i get a black screen with the title bar at the top say root explorer then it changes to SU request and then freezes. I think it is something to do with it not having super user permissions. Do you know of a way i can give it superuser permissions or reinstall it?

If not then i can still get a refund for 24 hours.

Yeah press Menu on the home screen, then go Settings. There's Applications, and you can uninstall it then reinstall it :)

Can anyone give me some info (one step at a time :-)  ) on putting the linux partition on the sd card, no linux know-how as yet.
Thanks.

I fired up a live linux distro to do it. It was relatively easy from there. Bring up a terminal and as root run:
cat /proc/partitions
Look for your current SD card, mine was /dev/sdc
Then run:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc
This wipes the first part of the SD Card. Many I've dealt with seem to have partition issues in cfdisk. Press Ctrl + C to cancel it after about 30 seconds.
Next run:
cfdisk /dev/sdc
If you've got, say, a 1GB CD Card, then make an 800MB Partition.
Then, go through and change it to partition type 0B (FAT32).
Next, make another one, Linux swap with the remaining.
Save the changes. Then run:
mkswap /dev/sdc2
mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdc1

Now, pull it out and pop it into your M001 :)

Note: That's all done vaguely by memory so I take no responsibility if you hose your HDD... There's possibly other methods, but it's how I did it! :)

Hmm, well that caused some brain pain! Linux is gobldegook to me !
i have now downloaded the Gparted Live cd as suggested by Linuxlover and have got it seeing my 4GB SD card.
If I want to install a 128mb swap file, would I first create a 3800mb fat32 partition and then a 128mb linux swap partition, is that the way it works?
Any help appreciated.

Cool, is the size of the linux swap partition critical? I just accidentally made it 129MB in error. :-(

Nope, makes no difference. It could be 120MB or 250MB and it'd still work fine :)
