SmithCity has/had 15% off mobile phones, so by the time you buy a $150 top up, the IDEOS dropped to $105. I bought one for my wife for Xmas.

Thinking of getting the Samsung Galaxy 5 (would live the S but it's outside my price range at moment). Should I go to DSE before the 24th to get one or take my chances on Boxing Day sales?

My crystal ball is broken but the Magic 8 ball says chances are good... interpret that how you may.

Personal gamble.  My money is on that it won't be any better than it is today.  I think boxing day sales for incredible bargains are a thing of the past, retailers are cutting all they can now.

Keeping in mind of course that anything electronic gets cheaper the second you walk out the door.

I brought one last week from DSE at $250 (the i5503 on XT that is, not the VF "5" which is still $380) saw they dropped the price to $239 so went back and hit them up with their price promise and got refunded the difference.  Great!

Thanks. Wasn't expecting a crystal ball just thought someone may have had past experience on what phone discounts on boxing Day are like. I usually avoid the shops like a plague that day.

The trend has changed over the last few year so that the boxing day sales have now largely gone and the specials are offered more right before and not after Christmas - but then who knows what they will really do.

The Samsung Galaxy i55037 is currently $259.00 at Noel Leeming and according to website still comes with free car charger. It is also $238 at Harvey Normans but without car charger.

Rang around as local DSE currently out of stock.

So much for the charger being "free"...I make it $21.  Telecom stores have a nice little car charger and screen protector pack on special for $15 that suits these nicely

Most places will "price-match" deals now anyway.

What... by my reading the phone is free and the charger is $299! ;)

Ya, it's all a bit silly isn't it, but it's all just part of the marketing effort to get your attention and present yourself differently from everyone else.

All good stuff!

Good to know about the accessories thanks.

As of lunchtime I have joined the Android world, now just to get through the rest of afternoon at work before being able to go home and play.

Are all these cheap Android phones much of a muchness? I mean for example, the Galaxy mentioned, the IDEOS, the LG Optimus etc?

In terms of processor yes they are all around 600mhz but the optimus one has multi touch and a bigger screen and better screen resolution.

The optimus one and ideos both have 2.2 standard the samsung comes with 2.1

It really comes down to the network you want to run it on and the price you're willing to pay.

In general bigger screen = better especially where there is no hardware keyboard.

Better screen resolution means more apps will show in the market (some don't support the smaller screen size)

Flash support isn't available on these phones because the processor is too slow and isn't (and won't be) supported.
