When you install a programme that requires root permissions (eg. wifi tether) it will ask you if you want to grant the programme SU permissions.

Rooting is only any use if you have programmes that require it, it doesn't make the phone go any better.

Ok so i know for sure that its rooted cause ive installed an app for ROOTED phones only and it works, now i read somewhere that one of the advantages of having a rooted phone is that you can have apps2sd, how does it go into sd? does it use sd when you download it?

Er, usually you have to install a custom ROM to get apps2sd. (Celestial teapot has it)
Although apparently you can just install it (using recovery) on a stock 2.2 ROM, which wont help you, since the stock ROM is 2.1 :)
You also have to partition your SD card with a ext3/4 partition. (Some recoveries will have a menu option that will do this for you)

So basically, it'd probably be easier to flash a custom ROM like cestial teapot. (I linked to it earlier in this thread)

hey, so i read the instructions and i wont backup my sd card cause there's nothing really important there, i jus copied my videos folder to my desktop and music.

Anyways, for partitioning the sd card i did the recovery thing and partion sd card isn't there, does that mean my sd card is already set up and i can just copy the program to my sd card and reboot into recovery?
and also(stupid question but im just making sure)when i have to select "flash zip from sd card" and have to reboot my phone, rebooting is just turning your phone off and then turning it on again, right?

Did you flash the AmonRA recovery image? Go through all the menus (It might be options or advanced or something, I forge texactly) and check. You should partition the sdcard before you flash the ROM.

Once you flash zip from SD card and it finishes, you can reboot it from the recovery image or just turn it off, yeah.

nzkiwiboy: seems noone wants to help.

z4root is available from RyanZA's web site.

I used it and it's a one-click root for a stock Vodafone 845 and a lot of other phones, too.

Getting root access allows you to have full system authority. On Android, this is useful for installing apps that do things the stock system doesn't allow to be done. For example:

ShootMe! - app allows you to take screenshots. You need root for it to work.

Root Explorer - Move / delete / edit system files as well as normal files. You need root. You also need to know why you'd want to mes with system files. Point is.....you can if you need to.

SetCPU - app allows you to set CPU speeds and profiles. You also need need a kernel that supports this as well as root access. Stock kernels don't usually.....but a community-compiled Android kernel often does...and you may be able to overclock your phone to make a great phone even better.

Wireless Tether for Root Users - app allows you to use your phone as a wifi access point. Many Android phones require you have to have root access to gain this functionality.

....and so on. There are lots of apps that do lots of things you aren't normally allowed to do.

Personally, I'd suggest that until you find such a clear and obvious requirement you have no need at all to root your phone. In other words, if you have to ask why.....you probably don't need to. :-)

nzkiwiboy: Hey i can't seem to find where to flash the AmonRA recovery image, i cant find it anywhere on my phone.

Follow the instructions :)
How to install - Windows, Linux and OSX

  • Download the recovery image of your choice above and extract the zip file

  • Put your device in bootloader mode - turn if off, then tap the powerbutton while holding the 'Volume Down' and 'End (Red)' keys

  • WINDOWS - double click 'install-recovery-windows.bat'

  • MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-recovery-mac.sh' followed by './install-recovery-mac.sh'

  • LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-recovery-linux.sh' followed by './install-recovery-linux.sh'

(Although the 845 you put it into bootloader mode by holding Vol up and the Call (leftmost button) key while you turn it on)

You need to do your homework. Getting it piecemeal here will probably result in two things:

1. Incomplete information leading to erroneous decisions leading to heartache, greif and the feeling the world hates you and everyone on Geekzone is stupid.....

2. Delay the moment you go to xda-developers and research what you plan to do properly.
