^ I would choose from the above, the Xperia Arc is there because it has a great camera.

Of those I would guess only the X5 is going to be within budget (and maybe X6 if/when it becomes available).

If you can spend a little bit more, then Nexus S would be a good option.
It does come in two versions, one that supports telecom XT as well.

oh i didn't notice the $700 limit,

Huawei X5 / X6
or Galaxy S i9000 (if price drops with new Galaxy S2) / 2nd hand one from someone upgrading
or Galaxy SL i9003 (depending on price, this is Galaxy S without Amyloid)

The i9000 can be had for ~$700 on Pricespy

HTC wildfire is a good choice if you only want to spend about 450, but the I9000 Is to laggy

No it doesn't, the wildfire is a low end QVGA phone, the Huawei X5 is midrange-high end with WVGA screen, it's far superior there is no competition.

The problem with the X5 for me is that it is just too big to be easily pocketable, which is a problem with most android phones - they are becoming mini-tablets! I wish, in addition to going 'big', hardware makers would also focus fitting the smallest possible body onto a 4" screen - edge to edge glass and a thin profile. There are a lot of people, like me, that want the functionality, but in a easily pocketable form.

I currently have a LG P500 and I wouldn't want to go with a physically bigger phone, which the X5 is. The best upgrade I can see at the moment in the upcoming HTC desire S which packs a bigger screen into the same body size as the LG P500. I am only hoping there are more similar options over the next few months?

On a totally different note, is there any easy way to link directly to the last post for GZ forum discussions? The only option I have found so far is to link to the last page and scroll down?

have a look at ZTE blade (orange san fransicso). it's a way best phone around for 99 GBP :) look for reviews on youtube and check out handtech.co.uk as they the onle one who sell international directly.
