for Samsung you really need to use Data Switch, I found a lot of others didn't work properly.

Thankyou for all the replies have been out doing the Bee thing so just in

the phone is stock standard running andriod 2.1 looking at google data setting a lot of you have mentioned is only available from 2.2 (am a tech-na-Phobe to scared to up date on my own)

will try data switch thanks for idea

i have 120mb of data but downloaded Topo maps to register hive sites (at home on wifi i thought) only to find i have used 240mb of data overnight which has ruined my new phone experience starting to think E7 was a better option (while it is a "dead" OS at least it does the basics) never mind Paul from telecom will be able to afford a new fly for the next time he is down here filming an add from the extra they have made from my mistake

thanks peter

Did you take a look at the Wifi setting as that's almost certainly what happened, as soon as your phone's screen went off then Wifi is disabled and so your download would carry on over 3G?

APNDroid and 3gwatchdog. 3g watchdog will keep an eye on your data usage and turn it off, using APNDroid, at 99% so you dont ever go over.
