any factory update will wipe the HBOOT, if you are talking about installing a custom 2.3 ROM then no it wont delete the HBOOT.

Like i said before you cant save that much space if your using the stock ROM because it requires alot of /system space.

Curious to know why you prefer the OTA updates?

Planning on using the stock OTA upgrade to 2.3 when it comes through.
I am aware that will unroot it, but root will be out for that soon enough. If not already.

Ok so stock ROM uses lots more room...

Because they work and so far I have been completely happy with them.
Am also not keen to have to play around trying to find a good modded ROM.
Basically the stock one works fine for me. i am just after a couple of tweaks.

LeeDroid would be the most used, reliable ROM out if you do do it. not my favorite [to plain] but its as close to stock as you will get but much faster plus you can use the sense HBOOT to get more room, I would seriously look into it... you'd be much happier with a custom version.

I will look into it more.
What puts me off is I do not know enough to fix it if something doesn't go 100% to plan.
I tried unrevocked a while ago so I could use an app that needed Root and it wouldn't work.

Seems different at first but its actually pretty simple if you have half a brain ;) after you root just do a full backup [nandroid] from recovery and flash a custom ROM before you change any HBOOT partitions or anything. That way you can just flash back to previous state easy. I wouldn't recommend even touching custom HBOOTs until you've played around with custom ROM's first.

Another option instead of custom partitioning on internal memory is to create an ext3/ext4 partition on your SD card and then use something like S2E (available from market but only for CyanogenMod 7 rom)

Its not too hard and pretty much gives you more memory space than you can use. I still have 633MB available for app installs!.

Ok so I bit the bullet and Rooted.
CM7
I'm having issues with partitioning the sd card though. Not sure if it's worked.
Also the screen is now really dim and the only way to change it is disable auto brightness which is disappointing.

I partitioned my sd card using a card reader in pc and gparted live cd.
This was the recommended way for the StarBurst rom (with data2sd) that I used to use before seeing the light of CM7.

I'm not having any problem with auto-brightness.

Device is HTC Desire A8181

Gparted is def the best way to go, if you have room on you PC hard drive i would just recommend install Ubuntu next to windows, its just like installing a game now ;)

The brightness is an issue with gingerbread ROM's, ReDux and Oxygen are probably the better 2 for that issue, ReDux will also give you crazy battery life... CM7 is to hacked up for me. ReDux is just so reliable...

Why are you not sure your partitioning went well? how did you do it?

Nah don't have room. Have never even looked at linux before!
You asked earlier why I didn't want to root? Well these are the reasons why! lol.
Also found that google maps doesnt work with CM7...
Might try and use the earlier version of CM

Maps work fine, you will just be missing something, Also dont panic lol you can always restore providing you backed up like i said ;)

Really you should try ReDux before any others.

Just flashed Redux, I'll let you know what I think. But first impression so far is cleaner and
more sorted than CM7
