Android activations currently running at 500,000 per day. Yep "clear proof" its going down the crapper alright.

I didn't say anything about Android going "down the crapper", it's anything but. What I said was there is massive fragmentation in the Android market.

Issues with vendor customisation, confusing upgrade paths for handsets and now clear proof that even major company can't deploy an app that will work across all devices is a massive problem that needs addressing. Google themselves have owned up to these issues but there is going to need to be a lot of work done to address them.

I don't think Android is failing at all. I disagree that the "fragmentation" you talk of, is why it is difficult for developers to code their software, to a point.

The point is this - if it were so difficult to code for the range of different handsets - why are there many thousands of Android apps right now, that work perfectly fine, across a whole range of different handsets?

I think the Skpye developers are just dragging their feet, for some unknown reason.

The limited support of the application was hard-coded for the benefit of one particular TelCo.

It took something like 3 hours before the hardware check was removed and a modified installer was released.

And comparing a range of handsets of different prices and specifications against a single high-priced handset with only 2 major options (of which only storage capacity differs) produced by a single manufacturer, is hardly just.

Google have started to specify upgrade path requirements to manufacturers, that devices compatible with the "Ice Cream Sandwich" version of the OS will be upgradable for a certain period, ala iOS (Can't run iOS 4.x specific apps on iOS 3.x in most cases, same deal).

At this stage you can have choice or (near) total compatibility. I'll take the former thanks.

I uninstalled the hacked Skype as it wasn't playing nice on my HTC Sensation. The app worked fine when in use. Video calling to other Skype users was perfect.

But after I stopped the call, the phone's CPU(s) seemed to be racing. The phone performed fine in use (dual-core!)...but it was getting warmer and warmer. After an hour, the phone was quite warm (not "hot") and the battery had dropped from 55% to 30%.....doing nothing.

You can't stop Skype the and the "Stop Skype" app hadn't been updated yet for the new version. I restarted the phone and the problem went away.

I don't use the video calling much, so uninstalled the hacked Skype and re-installed the stock version. If I'm desperate to make a Skype video call I can swap them around.
