NZtechfreak: The Stowaway is extremely good, but unfortunately no longer made. It pops up occasionally on Ebay but is quite expensive now (it was perpetually on sale at Expansys and quite cheap when I got mine).

The Logitech BT keyboard for Android is a pretty good alternative, since it's slip in case doubles as a stand, although no where near as portable.

I got my ones from wellNZ, you may want to contact them so see if they still have them in stock.

Thanks for the info.

Can the 7.7 with 3G be used with a headset as a phone?

@ NZTechfreak - looking forward to your (no doubt exceedingly thorough) review on the 7.7.

As an aside, I note a German user has posted YouTube video of successfully using a usb drive with the 7.7.  Not sure if this is at odds with your initial experiences re USB.  I also understand (per XDA & Whirlpool forums) that there's been a few firmware updates over the last week or so that have made quite a difference for some users.  I can imagine that might complicate the review process a little... Wink

Yes, it can. What's more, you can make calls without a headset too. It'll look kinda funky holding the slate to your head, but possible it is.

BTW, expansys.co.nz also sells the 7.7, both 3G/WiFi and WiFi version. Currently only the latter in stock though.

Excellent, I'll be eagerly awaiting this at my local Telecom or Vodafone store (whoever butchers it the least).

Well, it'll be some time. I emailed Samsung last week and asked whether they have an official release date for NZ yet and they replied that "unfortunately release plans have not yet been confirmed for New Zealand".

Seriously considering a grey import myself...

No more imports for me, not after my N8 fiasco.

For those of you who've pulled the trigger on the Tab 7.7, how are you finding it a few weeks on?

- anyone used it to watch a whole movie (no, not just a sample to impress mates!) - if so how did you find that from an ergonomics and resolution v screen distance perspective?
- are lag issues with honeycomb or Touchwiz much of a downer, and can they be worked around by moving to a different launcher (yes I know ICS in on the way)
- now that (if) the new gadget honeymoon period has worn off what's your frequency of usage on-the-go (my main use case) or at home ... i.e. is it still a/the go-to device or are you more likely to just take your high-res smartphone with you (I'm thinking of you, Note and Galaxy Nexus owners!)

Cheers

PS: my urgency and interest in a device that can act as a phone in the interim has heightened significantly in the last couple of days as think I may have irretrievably bricked my CWM enabled SGS after an ICS alpha ROM experiment.  I'm in Nokia e63 backup purgatory currently...

Well, Samsung UK has finally listed the 7.7 3G on their corporate website, but retailers still seem to have no or little stock. Perhaps things will gain momentum now. Should not be too many differences between the UK and the NZ version of the tablet, one would think.

Oh, wee tidbit that people following the review might like to know - Android developer extraordinaire Chainfire has posted his own mini-review in the comments section of my own review :)

Ooh :) Chainfire, you are getting famous :)

If you are still keen I have my 8.9 here. I am curious are they identical screens other than size?

Cheers
