Predated: The phone I'm seriously looking at getting at the moment is the Sony Xperia Ray

It has a really nice screen (3.3inch 300ppi Vs the iphone 4s 3.5inch 300ppi), 8mp camera and isn't a giant phone ( the biggest plus in my book) , plus all the extras like dlna.
It also has cynoagen mod support which I like too.

The problem with the current 'Sony Ericsson' range (As I see it and from what I've read) is the GPU. It's an Adreno 205.
Plus, HSDPA max's at 7.2Mbps and no NFC.
And the Ray also has other considerations; the screen viewing angle could be better and no HDMI.

If none of the above are a problem, then the SE Ray is a good and quite cheap phone.

If you're comparing to The iPhone 4S then I'd look at the GPU and the screen size and then expand out from there.

Don't think the SE Ray comes anywhere close to an iPhone 4S on GPU.

In terms of equivalence to the 4S the SII would be the closest for me.

Since the SII is too large the Nexus S is a reasonable choice, although it sounds like music and avoiding the cloud is important to you, in which case the Nexus S lack of a micro SD slot could be an issue.

The original Galaxy S is still worth a look too, very capable phone with unmatched audio quality, easy on the hands.

The Galaxy Nexus and Sensation/Sensation XE may even be worth a look, although they are also large like the S2 their ergonomics are superior and you may find them surprisingly easy to hold.

Really you need some hands-on time to see how you feel about each of them I guess.

The ray looks like a close fit. HDMI is covered by my S2 and bandwidth maximums have been all theoretical to me so far, especially in the CBD where throughput is touch and go.

when it comes to processing, what is important is UI response and usage, for heavy GPU work, again, that is the S2 role.

Can all Android (2.2 and above) sync to multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts? The Samsung Galaxy S2 and LG P500h could, but I'm not sure if it's a base Android feature of vendor specific.

Too large. I've had one for a couple of months for work (on XT) and it's a great "MicroPad" but it's size is cumbersome for my short sausage fingers.

Not 100% sure if all can, but my HTC Desire could do it with HTC firmware. It now has CyanogenMod 7 and it has a "Corporate" account setting which is for syncing with Exchange.

So perhaps consider a phone that can have CyanogenMod loaded.

I guess it'll be a roll of the dice with the Ray. The only smartphone in my collection that could not sync to multiple Exchange Accounts was the N8 (Symbian^3) so I'm hopeful...

Thanks so much for this recommendation, this is right on the money. Reminiscent of my Touch Diamond in size, but with all the features of Android, notably multiple Exchange Account Sync & Wifi Hotspot.

Thanks again, hopefully the journey is as good as teh startup.

ps. UI navigation is snappy and screen is crystal clear. Camera is acceptable, although I won't know about low light until tonight.

Galaxy Nexus but its large next to the iPhone if your talking form factor. HTC Phones have an awesome camera both in quality and Camera UI (High end ones)

Form factor was the main focus, and the Xperia Ray met the criteria, and so far it's a good fit. It's reminiscent of my HTC Touch Diamond, but all the Android functions and features I've become accustomed to, and a few nice touches from Sony.

Applied the Ray upgrade (to 2.3.4), smooth and painless. PC Companion software is pretty straight forward and nicely deployed from the handset (creates a virutal CD when connected by USB which launches the software download and install).

The Ray is all I hoped for, small form factor with crystal clear screen and full functioning. So far battery is very good, but of course it's a new battery, so performance in a few months will be the test.

8MP camera is acceptable for a phone (the N8 spoiled me in that aspect, but that aspect alone).

The mail view allows simple multi-select which is a plus (something I could not find on the S2).

To put my view in context, my phone is primarily a communications tool and less on a media/games device, so if this is your approach to phones, this could be the one for you.
