neoprint: Yeah I'm using a P500. Used the stock froyo rom for about 2 hours, updated to the offical GB rom ,used that for about a day. I then flashed CM7, which totally transformed the phone.Twice the battery life and way faster. Now I'm using a CM9 beta, most things work and it's faster still, and getting around 3 days out of the battery with moderate use. Overclocked to 806mhz, it's fantastic. I also upgraded from a u8150. Put a custom ROM on the damn thing, you won't regret it

Hey that all sounds kinda cool... were do I find the info? Got some links to the resources/instructions?

Certainly on the network speed side of things, a better phone makes all the difference. My X5 is night and day with data on 2 degrees. With the 8150, it was ok, but with the x5, it is faster than woosh wireless broadband (perhaps not surprising!). Tethering makes data sharing a fast reality and was very useful when a cell site problem rendered our woosh broadband useless a couple of days ago.

Our daughter has a p500, and liking it very much. Main gripe is the battery performance on standby - it seems to go through 50% overnight, and that's with 2G data, minimum sync settings. Are there any other tricks people use? (like an auto-airport app for certain times , etc)

Also, is it worth going to CM7? I would be doing it if it was my own phone, but for someone else is it not just tinkering for it's own sake. If it makes Angry Birds smoother she might be persauded..

Should double check the gps bluetooth wireless 3g etc. all these are turned off

I use Locale to do this. I have it set to mute when charging, turn off data and so on but only if charging between the hours of 11pm and 6am. Otherwise everything remains as normal. There is a lot of customizability in the app.

An alternative option would be an app called Tasker.

I convinced my 82 year old Mum to buy an LG P500. Once I had set it up for her whe finds it really great -loves it.
I had some challengers setting it up. The biggest one was knowing to put in APN settings (she is on Vodafone). I don't seem to have to do that on 2degrees on my V845. Anyway it took a bit to find the APN settings. I couldn't find them on GeekZone when I looked - I see they are there now. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. Anyway once set up things worked a lot better. I was tempted to put on 2.3 but some forums complained there was some problems with it. Does anybody here have any problems with 2.3?

I upgrade my V845 several times a month to the latest custom ROM. I back up the data and apps using two apps, MyBackup Pro for backing up txt, call history and MMS, and I use AppMonster for backing up Apps. I probably don't need both but MyBackup Pro seems to crash when restoring apps but is great at data, not sure how to back up data on AppMonster so I use both.

I have pushed apps onto my phone using a pc and web browser but sometimes it will not allow me to reinstall an app that I have already installed. Not sure why.

Battory life. I have improved both my phone and my mothers by using JuiceDefender.

Hey all, apologies to the people who asked me about the custom ICS ROM, I forgot all about this thread :)

Before you start, this WILL void the warranty. However, it is possible to go back to 100% stock where they won't be able to know it's been messed with, and if it gets broken to the point where you can't put it back, then chances are it's broken enough that they can't tell :)

First off, you need to make sure you're already running the offical gingerbread (there are two basebands for this phone, the old one, which came with 2.2 and the new one, which comes with 2.3. It's not like other phones where you can just flash the baseband, you have to put the gingerbread ROM on first, if you use the old baseband with this you'll find you can't get a signal).

Then, you need to root it. Here's a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200167

Once you're rooted, you might want to consider backing up your apps so you can just restore them once you have your custom ROM installed. For this I use titaniumbackup, only problem is you need the paid version to do batch backup and restores, but it's not that expensive. SMS backup and restore is good for backup up your text messages if that's important to you

Next up, is flashing a recovery. You need this to flash the ROM to the phone. I use clockworkmod for this, but there are others. Easiest way to do this is to find Rom Manager in the marketplace, the free version is more than adequate for this. If it doesn't work (which sometimes happens), try it again, if it still doesn't work, PM me and I'll walk you through flashing it manually (my laptop battery is about to die and don't have the time to go into details for that now).

Now for the fun part: you need to choose whether you want to run ICS (currently still in beta, mostly works, but has a few bugs, is a bit crashy and the camera doesn't work yet, word around the campfire is the camera will be fixed in the next few days) or Gingerbread.

The gingerbread I have linked to is Cyanogenmod 7.2, the P500 has recently gotten official cyanogenmod support, and at the moment they're nightlies. Pretty damn good so far, but when I used it (haven't used it in about 3 weeks) it had a wifi wakelock, so if you didn't manually disable wifi when not using it, it would drain the battery pretty heavily. Think it's been fixed now but don't quote me on that.

Put the .zip of the rom you have chosen in the root of your sd card. Turn the phone off and press the home button, volume down button and power button. Once the LG logo shows you can release the power button. You'll see the recovery show up. Volume up and down buttons move up and down the menu, and the search button selects. Back goes back (as you'd expect) Make sure you make a backup. I can't stress that enough, if things goes pearshaped you want to be able to go back to the way it was. Next, select wipe date/factory reset. After that, wipe cache partition. You need to do a full wipe so things don't get left over from before. Select install zip from sdcard. Select choose zip from sdcard, find the zip file, and select it. Click yes. It'll now flash your phone. Reboot the phone.

It'll take a while to boot for the first time, so don't be too alarmed.

Now you'll need to flash gapps so you have the marketplace.

After this you're pretty much done, reboot the phone and it should have a prompt to enter your google account. Now you can get down and dirty, overclocking (SetCPU and no frills cpu control are good), and link2sd are good places to start. Just be warned, once the bug bites it's very hard to go back to stock. edit: now you can restore your apps and texts once you've installed titaniumbackup and sms backup and restore. And to the guy that asked if angry birds runs better the answer is yes, it runs much, much smoother

I think there's an opportunity for someone here to provide an upgrade service.

Send them the phone and $20(?) and return postage, and get the phone back running the custom rom you desired. No need to learn how to do it all yourself on your main phone if you're not interested/don't have the time or whatever etc.

Keep in mind the P500 is not getting official CM9 (stable or release candidate). According to the team there is a lack of compatible media libraries and various workarounds required for it to run smoothly. There are various nightly builds around though.

There will most likely be other third party roms or CM9 kangs, but nothing official from Cyanogenmod (or LG of course)

Thinking of going to the CM7 rom (from stock).

Main worry is losing the N-Drive app that came with the phone - does TitaniumBackup keep and re-install it ok ?
