There was a sort of official B526 release last Friday (17-02-2012), but on the official Huawei page it still says beta. Someone on XDA referred to it as also "Informal Shipping Version".

The official version is supposed to be coming out this coming Friday (24-02-2012). No word that I've seen yet on what that will actually fix (or break).

Ok thanks.  I need to pay closer attention to what's going on then.  Cheers.

I've been switching between Aurora ICS and B522 at the moment, and use B522 during daytime...

Have you got a dual boot situation going on?

Did anything come of this?
It has been a while now, did Huawei release a solid 2.3.5 (for Amstel screens too) for the X5 in the end?

Typically, no.

But in all honesty, it probably doesn't matter any more because both Blefish and dzo over on xda seem to be fairly actively working together on a 3.08 kernel port based on the kernel source from U8860.

From their conversations on xda so far, it seems quite promising.

Re: Atmel TS... Blefish actually cooked up his own fix for this.
I have a synaptics TS so I don't need to use this, but if you have an atmel TS then you may wish to give it a whirl.

Ok so here we go:
B526 was the last one released for worldwide and is apparently beta:
http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/downloadCenter.do?method=toDownloadFile&flay=software&softid=NDQzNTg=
B528 has been released on chinese site, but no mention of it anywhere else:
http://www.huaweidevice.com/cn/downloadCenter.do?method=toDownloadFile&flay=software&softid=NDEyNTU=
Google translate tells me this is the andrews universal edition, whatever that means and the xda forums reveal it is english too. Has no beta tags.

The atmel touchscreen fix has been released on the Huawei BBS here:
http://bbs.huaweidevice.com/cn/forum/index.php?app=forum&mod=Detail&act=index&id=46269&p=last#p1181557
Google translate reveals some of the most interesting translation I have ever seen and no real details, but somewhere in the thread an update has been posted for atmel touchscreens that are jumping, oversensitive and sticking. It has been mirrored here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1643471/U8800_atmel.rar from this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533256
It is only for flashing onto b528.

Be warned, b528 is not easily rootable although there is a custom rooting program here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533922 in the 6th post. It should be ok, but it is flashing a new kernel which is unsecure as opposed to the secure kernel found in b528. Who knows if this kernel is atmel touchscreen compatible or not.

I am just skipping the whole mess and sticking with ezets cyanogenmod 7.2 with franco's kernel for now. Unless things resolve far more  or the 3.08 kernel based roms become too provocative not to upgrade (miui 4, cm 7.2, cm9, aurora are all working or in the pipeline) I wont be upgrading for a while.

It seems b526 international beta is currently the way to go for if you want to root relatively easily using super oneclick and then flash other roms.

Ok, that is all I know for now. Hopefully Huawei makes a perfect rom which is rootable and works for all u8800's soon!

Thanks very much for the detailed reply.

Seems B526 is the latest official offering here, and being released 17th Feb this year it's the most up to date version since the late December 2011 version I used on my parents phone.  Maybe I'll try the B526 on that phone then.

Having all sorts of bother with that phone, to the point where they will probably sell it now.  I'm wondering if I should pick it up as spec wise it's leagues ahead of my LG P500, but my P500 is rock solid and serves my needs perfectly.  From memory it's the Amtel screen hardware too.

All in all it's a bit of a mess from Huawei....  and has been mentioned before, it's now an older phone so I wonder how long they'll spend trying to sort it all before they just dump it and move on.
