I put ice cream sandwich on my sgs and then rooted it... well what a mess, I needed to do a full wipe after that.

Maybe I will wait until they release 'Warm apple pie' before I try that again!

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

10 months after it was 'previewed' and 5 months after first appearing on a phone, we will finally get ICS. Hip hooray!

Wasn't Google trying to get manufacturers to keep updating their phones for 18 months? That's what, 1.5 Android updates at this rate?

Not to mention 15 months after Gingerbread was released, and 9 months after the S2 went on sale.

With Android we always seem to be waiting for the next update. Hardly any phones have ICS and yet I'm already reading articles about Jelly Bean. Wtf?!

Wasn't Google trying to get manufacturers to keep updating their phones for 18 months? That's what, 1.5 Android updates at this rate?

Not to mention 15 months after Gingerbread was released, and 9 months after the S2 went on sale.

It should be an easier transition from ICS to Jelly Bean. There are just too many changes between Gingerbread and ICS for the OEMs to get updates out quickly.

Yes, I've seen talk of Key Lime Pie too, but only mentioning the name rather than any features so it doesn't count.

Honestly, the Nexus came out in November, Samsung are on track to release ICS updates within four months of that time. Seems quite reasonable to me, and before most manufacturers will manage it.

Buy a handset for what it is at the time it is released, or a Nexus handset, or not at all. Only sensible advice anyone can give. Buying for the nebulous promise of potential OS upgrades only ends in tears.

If you really want to upgrade as early as possible, you are in most cases best off installing a custom ROM. Unless of course you have the latest and greatest device which just happened to be released with a very up-to-date version of Android, or with a planned upgrade in the pipeline during or just after launch time.

It's usually the case that the Device Manufacturers tend to lag behind releasing updated drivers and whatnot required to update to ICS. For current example, in the case of the Galaxy Tab we're waiting on Camera drivers.

That being said, even with a couple of features not working, I've always managed to stay current across a slew of devices. The prime example is that the Very First released Android Phone, the G1 a.k.a the HTC Dream can run ICS. You can go flash a custom Rom on the oldest Android Phone (That hasn't had an official update past 2.1 I believe) with the latest and greatest ROM. Amazing.

The custom ROM development community is amazing, I really think any enthusiast relying on their Carrier to provide updates is missing out... big time. Not to mention that the Samsung stock ROM's are generally packed with bloat.
