Not saying you are wrong, that was just my experience.

It makes sense for the hardware to be the same TBH but I couldn't figure out what else would make the 900 MHz band insensitive on a modem that worked in an international version of the phone. Welcome any other ideas or suggestions, although as I say its running fine now.

No, I think I am wrong. Disregard my post. :D I double checked and there is i9100 / i9100T / i9100G hardware differences. I thought there was only difference in the 2 different CPU/GPU (Texas OMAP vs A9Cortex), but there are other subtle differences and a quick google suggests 3 models, with i9100 and i9100T having the most customs roms.

Yes.  It's a quad band 3G fone.  I've used mine on all 4 carriers with no problems.  Even auto populates the APNs for 2D and Voda but Skinny you have to do it yourself..

BABaracus: Does anyone know if they're the GT-I9100 or the GT-I9100G model (assuming they're all the same)?  As far as I can tell there's minimal practical difference if you're running stock ROMs, but the GT-I9100 is supposed to be more hackable.

Doesnt matter which one regarding ROMs bud

I read that there is way less rom development for 9100G vs 9100+9100T. Not sure if "way less" is enough to deter you from 9100G.

We don't get the 9100G in nz anyway, ROMs are the same so it doesn't matter just the radio etc

I also got one of these with the free TV, wondering what the best modem to use is for Vodafone / 2Degrees?
I have rooted it and put the stock ICS rom on it (DXL7)

Doesn't really matter When your talking about providers. You really just want the right modem/rom combo. You won't notice any better reception or anything, battery will be your best target to improve with modems

Well as I noted I got one also but I have a problem. It was for an arriving friend from China and she cannot read English. I thought that the phone would have Chinese language on it but it doesn't (it has a bunch of other quite obscure ones though). So it seems I have to flash a ROM from Hong Kong/China to get Chinese on it.

Can I do that without rooting it using Odin?  Does it matter if the ROM is from the 9100 and not the 9100T?

This is new territory for me so any suggestions appreciated.  I see somebody has flashed the ICS ROM. Does that have Chinese and if so, perhaps I could go for that one since it seems it works on the T model.

I can confirm my ics firmware has a few languages on it. One may be chinese, couldnt tell you its written in local language.
But you could find an appropriate countries stock firmware on xda, they get uploaded when they are released also on sammoble.com
Pretty easy to flash no need to root, just use odin.

That sounds promising. THis is what the Chinese language option looks like (in Chinese). It's the third and second to last language options on this screen (this is captured from my GN which is running ICS of course). The last option is Japanese.

Do you have that language option with the ROM you flashed?

Also I presume you flashed your 9100T (The Telecom branded one) which is the subject of this thread?  If so can I ask where you got the firmware from?

Many thanks

Well I found Hong Kong firmware from samfirmware.com but it's not clear if it's for the 9100 or 9100T so I am reluctant to flash it.
