You don't even have to look in this thread. All international quad core models have 1 gig of ram. The usa versions (Sprint/Verizon/ATandT/T-Mobile) are dual core and 2 gig of ram.

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?

The Korean versions are Quad-core with 2GB RAM and has LTE support.

Wish I could get one of those....

Hi everyone,

I have been an iPhone user for 4 years now and have been a very happy one.  I got to play with the Samsung Galaxy SII last year and really liked it.  Now that the SIII is out I am even more impressed.  Although logically I should wait for iPhone 5 to arrive and make a decision from there, doing that might just suck me into another iPhone and I think it is time for a change.

So coming from an iPhone perspective there seems to be heaps of android apps out there but maybe there are better places to look than others.  A couple of sites that I have checked (such as android) seem to not have options for NZ.  Am I correct with this or just missing something?

I know that this will be a learning curve for me but I am excited about that so happy to give it a try.  I do love the sound of the flexibility of android and the ability to really personalize a device.  But is this going to be a huge learning curve?  If so does anyone have any great websites/blogs that would help with my transition?

I think my biggest anxiety is that everyone around me uses iPhones.  I'd like to think that there are enough android apps out there for that not to be an issue.

Many thanks for any help or advice.

Be of no use over here given we haver no LTE as of yet and when we do it most likely won't be compatible.

Why the Koreanone is just for the extra Ram?? if so have as yet to see or read anyone having issues with lack of ram.

Welcome to android!

I've not owned an iPhone, so can't comment directly on the transiton, but there's a whole 50-page thread on "iPhone to SIII" over at the Whirlpool forums - should be a good place for others' experiences (link: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1926509)

There are now thousands of apps for Android and most of the big ones have iPhone as well as android versions. Once you've got a taste for changing stuff, head over to the XDA developer's forum where custom ROMs and kernels await (don't brick your phone though!) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1563

Enjoy the freedom!

Thank you!  I will check those sites out today and see what is out there.  I assumed that there were loads of apps to choose from but after buying from Apple for four years it just seemed sensible to confirm.

One other question I have is related to the Galaxy SIII and the Galaxy Tab.  Are these just bigger/smaller versions of each other in the same way that iPhones and iPads work?  In the sense that they operate in much the same way and in lots of cases what works on one will work on the other?

Thanks again for your help.

It is almost true that they are different sized versions of each other, most of the galaxy tabs (other than the galaxy tab 2) still use a slightly older version of android, but are due for update in the next month or 2. The functionality is very similar, like iphone vs ipad some apps only work on one or the other or are better on one or the other, but generally they feel very similar.

Thank you.  I just wanted to confirm that if I use and become familiar with the Galaxy SIII then the Galaxy Tab at some point will not be too much of a stretch.  I am not planning on buying a Tab but like to keep aware of what is available and how things work for students that I teach.

Spoiler Alert: Shameless plug coming up.

You should check out AndroidNZ.net !

I run the site and the other authors are mostly Geekzoners too, but lots of stuff there that you might find helpful. My (still in progress) S3 review has two parts out already and you'd probably learn a fair amount from reading them and watching the connectivity demo video (fair warning, they are LOOOONG, the longest review on the internet already even though incomplete). Besides that we have easy to follow guides for Rooting the S3, if you decide you want to do that, and also guides for safely backing up the device if you do Root it, and how to return to stock for warranty purposes. Of course app reviews/recommendations/other device reviews and news is there too.

Can I ask Lily do you use macs for desktop/laptop computing? Just wondering, as we are looking for someone who uses macs to write for the blog, and I'm sure people would be interested to read about a users experience of transitioning from iOS --> Android...

I'd be interested to see who here is running custom ROM's? Seems like Omega is the most popular and seems to have a LOT of enhancements.

Hello.hambone have a new Samsung and am excited to start using it. Thank you for your shameless plug! I shall be checking it out this weekend.

And yes I do use a MacBook Air daily for personal use and am happy to help out, especially if it helps to smooth anyone's transition.

Not sure it is the most popular, I used Omega for a while on S2 and although it was visually very good it was full of junk even given the bloatware remover tool so it was slowish.

As said few time on here I'm still using Foxhound it has the same enhancements but have the choice of removing bloatware before you install through Aroma installer.

Indi has the OTA app foxhund does as well but is built in to settings where you can also set cpu etc which is handy if you are into over/undervolting. Has the ninphetamin3 kernal which seems very good especially on battery life.

I see Allinace (formerly darkyrom) also have one out which i may try as these have all the junk out and no bells and whistles.
