Let me break it down for you...

Google Play Store US
Nexus 5 (16GB): 349 USD
Shipping: 9.99 USD
YouShop shipping fee: ~25 NZD
Customs tax: ~115 NZD (from http://www.whatsmyduty.org.nz/)
12-month warranty: free (provided you ship to/from US at your own cost)

Total: ~575 NZD

2degrees
Nexus 5 (16GB): 699 NZD
24-month warranty: free

Difference
~125 NZD

Most US mobile providers offer the phone at 100 USD above Google's price (which is subsidised). This is around 120 NZD. Not only that, you're getting an extra 12-months of warranty, as well as the ease of being able to deal with any problems locally.

tl;dr 2degrees are offering a fantastic deal, do your research before throwing around random numbers.

Your numbers aren't entirely accurate because you're comparing the import costs of a single imported phone vs a bulk import. 2 degrees would be getting the same international version that is sold in Aussie for $450 NZD so I think it's more than reasonable to ask why there is such a big difference in price and I think it's far from fantastic when compared to what Australian's pay.

We're used to be ripped off compare to most things in the US, but usually Australia get's ripped off too so we let it go.

In this case, you can get the Nexus 5 for 400AUD (+ shipping, let's say 480 NZD). So you can get the phone in Australia for less than 500 NZD and we think getting the phone for 700 here is a great deal?! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the CGA and the two years warranty, but if given the choice between paying $200 for a warranty or taking the risk I know which one I'm going for...

So really your 24 months warranty isn't free, it's 40% of the purchase price...

Mate comparing the subsidised Google Play price to the NZ RRP from LG is ridiculous. Google are selling masses of devices at little if any margin. It's simply not profitable for anyone else to do it.

Wait until Australian carriers/retailers announce their pricing and then compare it with the local price. I wouldn't be surprised if they sell it for $649AU.

Google sell the Nexus devices for bugger all. I'd be surprised if they made even a slim margin on the hardware. They are extremely heavily subsidised in ways we'll probably never know the full extent of, and certainly more than other companies with much less buying power can manage in New Zealand. Google have incentives to push higher-end Android hardware to price-conscious consumers, to help reshape the broken US wireless market where hardware is grossly undervalued, and of course to get current spec devices in the hands of developers. They also make money back against that investment through their products & services via the Play Store, and I'd wager they make an awful lot more proportionately in their serviced markets like Australia, the US, and the UK, than they would in NZ, because their full range of services are not available here due to the prohibitive costs of licensing and the small market and the percentage of successful development studios and et cetera. I was surprised we got All Access Music, to be frank, and Books were a nice recent addition as well.

LG NZ & friends have chosen to bring this device here because there's a niche enthusiast market, & they've done so for $100 less than last year (Presumably the lack of uptake for LG's higher-end devices in NZ plays a factor here as well). That's pretty neat.

No, the local players cannot subsidise the real world costs of a high end smartphone to anywhere near the extent Google can. They should not be expected to. It's unrealistic. End of story.

Instead of complaining about the local retail price - which, considering the factors involved, the warranty, the logistics, the retail, the support, everything involved in ranging a device - is pretty good, how about asking why Google doesn't serve the New Zealand market & sell devices directly, and what we can do to change their minds?

Mine is still on the way to youshop, that's what I get for being lazy and getting up late :P

On a side note, does anyone know if the customs gift concession can apply to youshop orders? My mum's birthday is coming up and a phone makes a nice present :P and the concession would eliminate the need to pay the GST & fees since the amount taxable would be below the threshold.

When someone gets hold of one of these phones who happens to have a Canon or Nikon dSLR (ideally a Canon 6D), I'd really appreciate hearing if the dslrdashboard app works. It *should* have worked on the Nexus 4, which I bought with the purpose of remote camera operation as a high priority, but it doesn't. The problem relates to USB hosting and OTG, with the N4 being unable to supply the necessary current.

It goes a bit deeper than that though as my connection would be by using the camera as a wifi hotspot, so USB doesn't enter into it at all. I suspect that when the glitch in OTG support was found, they pulled support for that, but in so doing also pulled the underpinnings for the WiFi approach.

I'm going OK with Canon's EOS Remote app (which somehow avoids the problem), but it does not offer histograms to allow accurate assessment of exposure. Canon were useless when I asked if anything could be done, or even suggested to the app developers.

Anyway, if someone happens to be in a position to check, I'd really appreciate it.

I actually already got the NZ Tracking number.

I was gonna call that 0800 number ...but I figured they won't have the Customs-Entry number yet because the product isn't there....and i can't pay for it yet anyways..dont know how much it is lol

so if my calculations are correct, it'll be costing about $25 NZD to send it back to youshop; and then an additional $25 for youshop to forward the replacement to us. that's of course, if we're hit with the dead-pixel-scenario.

I saw it on the WHS website and sent them an email asking them if i could pre-order in albany store and pick up on the day, they told me they had no access over each shop so I would need to call in to the shop.
Did that on the way home, talked to them gave them the product code (off their website) and they put it into the system as a special order, you can either pay then or when you pick it up.
The guy said that as soon as they get stock in they will call me.
