The One X GPS is noticeably inferior to my Note (which has GLONASS like the S3). That lock indoors doesn't mean a lot to be frank, apart from it may indicate improved GPS over older mobile GPS hardware. In actual tracking it produces notably worse tracks than the Note, it's signal is weaker, and occasionally it loses signal altogether. It's fine for basic navigation, but for sportstracking/geotagging and any other GPS related activity that demands more exacting performance it's not up there with GLONASS equipped hardware.

Can't say that is my experience. I use it to track my paths when flying, that is fine.  I have used it on an Adventure Race (http://www.rogaine.org.nz/) and it seems fine.  Worked fine for a 4 hour trek in the Hunua Ranges in the weekend.

I cant say I have seen a single issue with the GPS.

Don't get me wrong, it's fine for lots of purposes, but it falls an appreciable distance short of units with GLONASS + GPS.

Would have thought the Hunua ranges would be difficult to properly assess the accuracy of the tracks, the line of best fit on my MyTracks tracks on road is fine for navigation but nothing to write home about.

I guess it depends a bit on what hardware you've come from - what GLONASS equipped units have you used skyplonk?

I haven't used a phone with GLONASS (or noticed it was enabled), unless my sensation had it enabled? (never had a problem, so never looked.) My etrex 10 has both and my One X does not seem far off.

Sensation doesn't have, at present only ones I know of are the Moto Razr, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S3, iPhone 4S and the AT&T version of the One X (possibly all S4 Krait handsets have it, but I only know for sure about the AT&T One X). I thought you might have used a GLONASS equipped phone before since you said your experience doesn't match mine, obviously if you've not used a GLONASS equipped phone before your experience won't match mine.

Fair enough!  My comments were really (as I said) based around rather heavy use of the GPS (Aviation and Recreation) and never had anything short of stella performance, or hugely different than my etrex.

Cheers

Hi guys. Thanks for the input and yes I do have a small list of things I use the phone for. We did end up going with the HTC one X. So far so good. Only 1 app so far on it that i didn't like was the stock standard email client. Love k9 mail. So using that.

Had to google GLONASS lol. IF it improves GPS by a significant amount it must be pretty amazing!

Check the my review segment on GPS for the Galaxy Note and the accompanying video at AndroidNZ.net, GLONASS makes a big difference - seeing nearly twice as many satellites at all times means your lock strength and accuracy is considerably improved!

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S.... seriously tempted to upgrade to an HTC One X.

Just one question for those who now have the device... are the heat issues overhyped?

Heat issues? What heat issues? It gets warm at times, but so did my desire. At least this hasn't boot loooped due to over heating yet!

It gets warm when I play heavy heavy 3D games, like Shadowgun or Dark Meadow - when you see them you realize why - it's like playing a console game on your passively cooled phone. But otherwise it's no warmer than my old Desire. Only time I've gotten the "overheat" light is after a while of playing Dark Meadow with an MHL cable plugged in (so the device is charging at the time). But when unplugged, you don't run into this.

Mine gets warm, never hot. (And mine is in a case). I am in Auckland, you can come and have a look at mine if you want. I have Doom, Duke Nukem, GTA3 and X-Plane installed if you want to try for your self.

It also gets warm when playing Angry Birds Space, and when showing the animated weather widget for extended periods (as I noticed last night), so it doesn't just take the heavy hitting 3D games for this to happen.

That being said, the heat hasn't been a usability hindrance to me. Just something I've noticed, and haven't experienced in a phone for a while (since my old Hyundai flip phone back in the 90s which had heat issues). Its also not overly surprising considering the thin form factor of the One X, and all the grunt contained therein.

If you like K9 have a look at Kaiten Mail, made by the lead guy on K9. Nicer layout in my opinion and seems to be easier to find your way around. But you have to pay for it.
