turbotailz:

So last night I was walking to get some butter chicken as you do, had my Sennheiser Momentum headphones on and listening to some sweet music. Only to find that the music would keep "skipping" (I'm not sure of the correct term to describe it) quite frequently, like the Bluetooth signal was weak or something. I never had this issue while just sitting and using the headphones, only while I was walking, phone was in my pocket. Can't tell if this is a problem with the headphones or the Note 9. Anyone else experience this issue?

I get this as well with the new PXC 550 headphones.  I also got google play music randomly pausing.  Note sure if the pausing is the phone's battery saving kicking in or if it's the headphone's "automatically pause when you take them off" feature not working.  Still fiddling with settings.

I also get the odd bit of not pleasing static i.e. when I am changing the noise cancelling settings on the headphones.  I am going to try my normal pair (sony 1000x) and see what the pattern is before panicking.

fabianz03: I'm just glad that Note 9 in NZ does not always show the NFC icon in the status bar whenever it is turned on. That icon is hideous, its pointless and it takes up space.

If you download good lock from the Galaxy store you can then download a status bar customiser app that lets you disable any icons you want.  I agree though, no point having an icon for something that's always on.

I have almost achieved a total black ui which as well as looking cool saves battery life.

Install a black theme, there are many but i used material dark.

Then install an app which gives you all black wallpaper and lock screen background.  There are many but i used pitch black.  You can uninstall the app after you use it.

Then the minor tweaks to finish everything off:

In the settings tell the phone to use the current theme for the nav bar.  While you are in there set the button order to the right way around, not the Samsung order.  This also gets you the normal nav bar icons not the Samsung ones.

In the settings set the background to the lock screen notifications to fully transparent.  This gets rid of the white background and just makes the notifications white text on a back background which is almost like a special aod display.

In gboard select one of the darker or the fully black theme.  This makes your keyboard dark.

I use Nova launcher so have set the background of the app drawer to be back as well.

I then go through all my apps and if they have a dark mode i select that.  An increasing number if apps do have this mode these days.

You can select night mode in Samsung internet but i don't as it's a little off looking.

Then sit back and enjoy your clean look and better battery life.

So, since the Note 9 is my first Samsung phone, I'm quite worried about AOD* and screen burn in.

I currently set mine to turn on between 8am to 11.59pm. I've read conflicting reports on AOD. Some say they cause burn in no matter what. Some say it doesn't cause burn in because it moves around pixels by pixels and the refresh rate drops while its on AOD.

So what's the deal?

Yes? No? Yes but unlikely?

*AOD = always on display

Has anyone seen decently priced screen protectors? Can't justify spending 40 or 70 bucks for one. Does Spark or Vodafone stock any? I just can't seem to locate any online (other than TradeMe) which is odd for a flagship.

That's because of the curved screen. See my explanation above. If you are happy with plastic the magic self healing one from Samsung ($25 with install) is the best, possibly the only, option.

I prefer the plastic actually. Is that available from the Samsung kiosk only?

Hey, finally on board with the Note 9 from PB today. Awesome device indeed!

With the trade-in deal, can someone confirm whether we need to send the charger back as well? I can't see anything in the FAQ that talks about this, so I am assuming just the phone itself is suffice?

I checked because you're right, it's nowhere to be seen on their T&Cs.

You only have to send the handset. You can keep the charger, cable, earphones etc.

Just a few things regarding the note 9 and the gear vr. Sadly the gear vr i got with my Galaxy s8+ (r324 model) does not work even though pb tech and the guys at the Samsung shop said it does. According to Samsung support you need the model that came with the note 8 (r325) and then then you need a new usb c adaptor that fits the width of the note 9. The adaptor you can get free from pb tech and there will be a new sub model of the r325 that comes with the adaptor in the box. More details here:

https://www.samsung.com/sg/support/mobile-devices/is-samsung-galaxy-note9-compatible-with-gear-vr/

@NickT are pb tech getting the new gear vr with the adaptor in stock?

Just submitted my trade-in request. I can confirm it is just the phone itself that they need. They specifically mention on the confirmation screen that chargers, etc are not required.

Does it have to be a nz sourced phone you are trading in?  i.e. i have a dual sim s9+ from overseas, can that be used to trade in?
