And the Nexus 7 has a significantly larger battery capacity... compare oranges with oranges next time, ok?
IntegerIsNumber: Anyway, my point is if I disable data connection when I'm connected to wifi. I get about the same battery life as the Nexus 7 on S3.

mjb:edit: look, to be honest, if you have the ability to charge your phone every night when you're sleeping, then seriously, who cares if you have 80%, 50%, or 20% remaining at the end of the day?

You know, if I follow the road rules, my SV6 does the same speed as a Maserati... You're not comparing equivalent hardware, so any observation you make is irrelevant.
Yes, leaving data services connected will drain the battery more than disabling them. that's simple math. Although, you will find that having the data connection enabled will not significantly impact battery life - it's applications using that connection (incurring radio transmissions, which incurs current draw, which consumes battery capacity) that impact battery life. When you disable background data, all you're doing is telling the OS to not allow apps to communicate over your data connection while the phone is sleeping. The data connection will still actually be there. edit: I would assume that leaving the data connection open is not going to be a significant drain - unless there's some form of frequent keepalive required, but experience tells me that's not the case - it's more likely that it's just an operating state. JohnR?
To conclude, if you want to improve battery life - find the apps using background data, and remove them, or disable their background syncing. don't disable background data, which to me, is not using your smartphone for its intended purpose.

Agree with most of your other comments, but this one - no.
If I have to head off to the hospital, or I'm going out for dinner or some other social event till late, I don't want to find myself away from town needing to make phone calls etc with my battery close to being flat.
To have 50% battery mid evening, is a big safety net for me.
kiwitrc: Hint: The S3 has a replaceable battery.
IntegerIsNumber:motorwayne:Johnk:networkn: johnk: I'd take a backup and do a factory reset. Load no apps, and see what your baseline usage is like. What is your cell coverage like?
I might just try that, will try airplane mode tomorrow for a few hours at a time, should see if its cell coverage then?
Cell coverage for me is pretty good, always seem to be on full bars of XT, running stock ICS from Telecom, unrooted still ( I know, I cant believe I havnt rooted yet myself). Live in Henderson at work in Takapuna at the moment, so pretty main areas for coverage I would assume.
Just did a factory reset and tested it again...NO BETTER. So next test is to change to a fresh battery and make sure it's not the battery life getting sucky.
Will report back tonight.
Lastly...if this fails to produce results...I'm going back to ICS.
Why don't you try my suggestions?
1. Deactivate Data mode (power > deactivate)
2. Settings > wifi > Advanced > Stay connected only when plugged in.
3. Maps > setting > disable location sharing, disable report from this device, disable Automatic check-in
4. Don't leave Facebook, Skype sync on.
5. Never leave SKYPE on running (It's a blood sucker app).
You should now see your battery last longer if not by twice.
This is worth doing if before considering to move back to ICS. Or flash LF2 modem and that should fixed some Data connection drain. (My assumptions and from my own experiments).
motorwayne:
Because...it aint that that is causing the issue. The only thing that changed is the ROM, from ICS to Polish JB and the battery started sucking a Kumera. Before JB my battery was fine will all the normal stuff running.
So, nope...
Sony
wakaridnnz: Just a heads up - available between 7pm & 8pm today only from Dick Smith .The warehouse are selling it for just $1 more, and if you go to warehouse stationary they advertise that they better other shops by 5%.
