Dear Diary,

This morning I woke up at 7am with 98% battery life on my S3.

Yesterday evening I installed the latest CM10 nightly, and the new Siyah RC1 release. (and all my apps including Facebook etc, and used them all, so apps were running or not running as the case may be, in a normal fashion - i.e. not an 'empty' install).

I turned WiFi and mobile data off, but left the phone activated for calls/sms.
Tasker was disabled.
SetCPU had two profiles - 1. Screen off = 200-200MHz. 2.Screen on = 200-600MHz.
I fully charged the phone.
Took it off charge at 10pm after setting alarm for 6am.
Snoozed alarm 5 times before turning off at 7am.
Checked battery - 98%.

Today I am truly happy.

I get similar results in flight mode, typically 1% overnight, but no alarms on. Be interested to see how you go through the day with normal use. Is this better than what you have previously got with a similar setup?

Yeah, flight mode has typically been ok for me too, but to get 2% drain overnight with cell radio on - wow, im stoked.

Previous best is 2% per hour drain overnight with cell radio off and zero screen time. So to get 2% *total*for 9 hours with cell radio on is a massive jump.

I'll keep ya posted.

I've searched the web a bit but can't see any comparisons between CM10 and the official 4.1.1 JB roms that have been released now.

Would you say the speed/smoothness difference is large still on the S3 (given there's no TouchWiz), or is it fairly similar.

Most of the comparisons on the net compare ICS 4.0.4 official vs CM10.

I'm just wondering if I should take the plunge, if its worth it and if its really stable enough - seen there are a few MMS and Wifi Hotspot bugs that have only just been fixed recently..

Touchwiz JB is significantly better than Touchwiz ICS, in every way, including speed/responsiveness.

CM10 is even better again than Touchwiz JB (noticeably so).

I havent found anything broken, though I haven't been reading CM forums for a wee bit.

Make a Nandroid backup, then its a dead simple/fast exercise to revert if you want to.

Use Titanium to backup apps and selected data (APs, pairings, accounts etc) and setup of a new rom is literally a ten minute job to get everything running, and all your apps/sites logged in already etc.

Better Battery Stats figures below.

1.1% per hour.
81% left.
16 hours on (powered up, and cell radio turned on the whole time).
Screen on 30mins.
WiFi on 3mins for browsing.
6 minutes of phone calling.
About 20 sms.
Alarm going off 6 times (snoozed 5 times).
Brightness on auto (which on CM10 is much brighter than lowest Auto bright on TW JB).

Very tempted to try and go for 4 days from mid-Sunday without charging. (I need some GPS and media playback Sunday morning that will kill off an economy run).

No worries.

I'm still learning Titaniums capabilities. Ive had it for ages but only use the basics.

Start with apps+data backup, and manually do other things (accounts/A.Ps/pairings etc) if you don't want to run into trouble going to a completely different ROM.

SMS Backup + works great for regular backup of SMS, and restoring last x messages to a new ROM too.

If you use a custom launcher (Nova etc), Titanium will backup all your screens/layouts etc with the normal app data.

I used Mobile Odin Pro to flash Siyah. I use CWM Touch to flash roms, and I use Rom Manager Pro for downloading ROMs sometimes (although this time round I downloaded direct from get.cm in my browser.

Backup.
Backup.
Backup.

Name your Nandroid backups well, and save them on your PC. Just append "stock ICS" or "CM10 clean" or "CM10 with all data and apps" etc to the auto date naming, and you will quickly have several "good" ROMs to go to (with no confusion), if you need to revert, or if things turn to crud in a day or a week or a month.

Also, in the STweaks app that Siyah introduces, I changed the setting on the 'Screen' tab for 'Touch Boost Level' from default 800MHz to lowest 500MHz setting. Probably doesn't make that much difference.

Just be careful if you have an SD card formated with exFAT. Samsung official roms support it, but CM10 does not and will corrupt your SD card. If not backup and go for it.

My 32gb MicroSD was formatted by the S3, is there any way to tell on the phone what filesystem format it used?

Educated guess from what little I have read on the topic is that it's Fat32.

Couldn't see an easy way to tell on my handset.
