I'm not sure I'm following your train of thought here. If what you're asking is whether you need root to use Odin, the answer is no, Odin does not require root.

Flashing a firmware package with Odin will replace the entire system partition, which would overwrite the su binary if it was there, in other words - removing root access (which is how you restore to stock). The only thing you need to use Odin is a phone in download mode.

Think I got it, because I've only done all this stuff with a phone that was rooted in the first place I wasn't sure if you could pick up a faulty unrooted phone and use Odin or one click etc. thanks.
