scuwp: Was thinking the same thing. Why were you given the phone? If it's not your property hand it to the police. You could get charged for theft by finding or receiving stolen property. Great if you are trying to do the right thing, but asking how to get around security does sound dodgy to me.

wow suspicious much maybe you are judging them by your own standards, I prefer to give some people the benefit of the doubt.

What will the Police do if the person hasn't reported it missing which I'm guessing they haven't otherwise would expect teh police would advise locking the phone.

I have twice done what the OP is trying to do and even delivered one phone back, the thanks and appreciation was worth the effort.

Honest officer. I just found this 40" TV outside my house and I decided to store it in my lounge until I had time to take it to a police station. I plugged it in and was just checking it was going so I could determine if maybe it was thrown out as rubbish.... Hmmmmmmm.

The op clearly can't easily identify the owner therefore should hand it in. Still no word how it came to be handed to them.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

so you are inferring the OP obtained it illegally and just wants to unlock, hmm how dumb are they then given their time on GZ and its a smart phone that can be locked, also it doesn't take too much searching to find how to open it. Once the Police have it they will do nothing other than list it and leave it locked away.

You're in luck. Use Odin to flash a root mod and custom recovery then use adb to reset the lock screen settings.

If you're not willing to do that then quit asking how to unlock the screen and turn it over to the police.

Just sit in one place for about an hour.

The pissed off owner is more than likely trying to geolocate the phone and will be around shortly with a lynch mob. Be nice to him and his big friends when he arrives.

Or you could take it to the Police.

Inferring nothing of the kind, just demonstrating how an innocent situation could be easily construed by the authorities as something criminal. If you can quickly and without any doubt identify the owner (which I have done a couple of times myself with found devices) then by all means return the property to them and bask in the warm fuzzy's that result from doing something nice for a stranger. If not...report it and hand it in to the authorities. They may actually have a lost property report to match it to and get it back to the owner. It happens more often than you think.

What if the phone was used to facilitate a robbery?
What if it was linked to a child pedo ring?
What if it is plain stolen?

The OP doesn't give any details around coming into it's possession, so just being cautious.
